From the Akron Zoo's Facebook page: Thank you for visiting in 2016! Because of your support we have set a new attendance record in 2016 with 398,878 visitors! The new attendance record eclipsed the previous attendance record of 389,508 set in 2013. We also set two other attendance records in 2016. We set a new single day attendance record on Sunday, October 23, during Boo at the Zoo, when 7,550 guests visited, making it the highest attended day in Akron Zoo history and we also set a new record for Boo at the Zoo with 29,938 guests who visited the 6-day popular Halloween event. We hope you enjoyed the snow leopard cubs, our new event Wild Lights, our first ever Chilean flamingo that was on exhibit and much more last year. See you in 2017!
From Akron Zoo's Facebook: New exhibit coming to your Akron Zoo on June 3, 2017, Curious Creatures! The exhibit will be located in Komodo Kingdom and replace Journey to the Reef, which closed in November last year. The new exhibit will include animals that are uniquely different or have odd adaptations allowing guests to learn about some of the world’s most “Curious Creatures.” Some of the unique species that you will be able to learn about in the new exhibit include naked mole-rats, leaf-cutter ants, electric eel, red-eyed tree frogs, walking batfish, chain dogfish, flashlight fish, mata mata turtles and more. The new exhibit will keep a few species that were in Journey to the Reef, such as sea nettles, giant Pacific octopus and coral. In addition we will also be showcasing some carnivorous plants such as Venus flytrap, pitcher plant, bladderwort and more. In total, Curious Creatures will include over 20 exhibits and several interactive areas like the learning lab, where guests can see marine and terrestrial invertebrates, a mood wall that simulates the helpful adaptation some animals have to blend in and change color and a strength tester where guests can compare their strength to that of the powerful mantis shrimp.
From the zoo: The layout will be different, for example we will have a dark area to accommodate the animals like the flashlight fish.
The zoo posted to Twitter a photo of the exhibit area currently. Unlike the minor changes that were made from Jellies to Journey, Journey to Curious Creatures is a complete renovation and reconfigurement of the entire area.
The diva has left the zoo. Keesha the sloth bear has moved to Zoo Miami. I wish Zoo Miami the all the luck dealing with this fickle diva. Her replacement will be announced soon along with several other animal moves.
Yes. She has been alone since Sakar died in 2014. I am anxiously waiting to see who will move in to that exhibit.
I am not sure what animal I would like to see in the space, but I am hoping it's not the sloth bear again unless they do some renovations!

Happy to have a sun bear back in Akron. Especially happy for it to be someone I am close to like Scruffy.
The zoo has had to close due to reaching attendance limit for in-zoo at one time. It is a free day, which there have not been many. They are usually in the winter. I have never heard of the zoo having to do this ever before.
