The map of the new Akron Zoo. The current zoo as of tomorrow, plus Pride of Africa and Wild Asia.

Picnic Place now has real pavilions instead of tents. Renovations to Grasslands Cafe and the snow leopard plaza are now complete. Wild Lights decorations are going up. It appears that at least a portion of the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens will be used. It appears the sheep may have left already. Wild Asia will go as far north as the the butterfly bench in the Zoo Gardens. Markers can be seen. I am just happy I got to go through Tiger Valley one last time and remember all the memories and the residents who lived there the past two decades.

There will be a new perimeter road for zoo vehicle access it goes from old Perkins Park Drive near the train, along the perimeter fence to Auldfarm, and then turn for a short distance until exiting to Auldfarm.

Forgot something. The rainforest exhibit is completely empty. I mean empty. No plants, animals, or water. It is being renovated.

    From Akron Zoo:

At this time, there will not be any new species in the rainforest. The habitat is getting an update. Yes, Pride of Africa will have storks. This change happened after the maps were created.

Okay. They were not out Sunday. I was told they will leave at some point. It will once again become a goat retirement yard.

Was Tiger Valley fenced off? Was there a map banner up yet for Wild Asia?

The pathway was blocked by the lion exhibit and across from the eagle exhibit.

Meet our two new red wolves, Waya and Mohe! The male wolves arrived from Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo in Greenbay, Wisconsin and are now out in our red wolf habitat daily.

Waya, which means “wolf” in Cherokee, and Mohe, meaning “elk” in Cherokee, are four years old. The brothers were born on May 22, 2014 at the Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo.

With Waya and Mohe’s arrival, our current male red wolf, Itabi, who arrived here at the Akron Zoo in 2016, has moved to Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo with a breeding recommendation from the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP). The Akron Zoo will be open during the day on days of Wild Lights beginning this year. The zoo is closed between 4pm to 5pm. Wild Lights opens at 5pm.

The zoo posted a nice series of Facebook videos about animals in retirement earlier this week in conjunction with Giving Tuesday.

The zoo also confirmed on Twitter or Instagram that they will be getting more lions. Tamarr and Mandisa are getting roommates either to join them or to rotate with them. I am not sure which. Still no news on the number of Speke’s gazelle are coming. It appears that the sheep are gone except the retired sheep which will live in the retirement yard in Wild Prairie.
