A female snow leopard cub was born back in April and will appear on exhibit later this summer. It’s a girl! Akron Zoo welcomes new snow leopard cub

An article about “Pride of Africa” - opening this weekend! Akron Zoo’s ‘Pride of Africa’ exhibits open Saturday Looks pretty nice based on the photos.
Looks to be another great addition to this medium sized zoo. Building a new hoofstock exhibit is definitely a nice touch and something we sadly do not see often anymore. It is interesting to see only (1,1) gazelle though as I have not heard of many zoos keeping them in breeding pairs.
More gazelles will come in the future. They are a breeding pair. In the future, I could see the zoo getting more hoofstock. I think additional Africa sections could be coming over the next couple decades.
The zoo has modified its terminology. Animals live in habitats. A group of habitats make up an exhibit. I went Friday and Sunday. 4000 members came for the Friday preview. The zoo did a fantastic job. There are three main areas. Two main plazas and a middle section that allows vehicle access to Grizzly Ridge since it is now cut off. The first plaza has the boma and the train station. The second plaza has the lion habitat, the Speke’s gazelle/white stork/crested guineafowl habitat, restrooms, a Dippin Dots stand, a research vehicle, and a water spray area. The lion habitat has two views. The large standard one and a tent area. The tent provides three sided viewing. The zoos veteran lions love sleeping here. The lion habitat is three times larger than the previous one. The gazelle habitat is a nice mixed species exhibit. I will look forward to the future when more gazelles are in residence. The zoo is waiting on the male guineafowl. I also expect more animals in the boma in the future. The have one Boer goat adult and a half dozen kids right now. They have renovated the zoos cafes. They also moved the Grizzly Ridge Dippin Dots to Pride of Africa. The old Wild Prairie barn area has been fenced off for future renovations. No plan or timeline available. Some of the species in Curious Creatures have changed. The zoo has had births of a snow leopard, a musk deer, and a Humboldt penguin. All of Tiger Valley, except a small building that will remain, has been removed. Wild Asia opens Summer 2020.
There will be birds in Wild Asia. They will will be located about where the old aviary was near Grizzly Ridge.
The zoo’s late black and white ruffed lemurs will be replaced by blue-eyed black lemurs according to new signage. A new octopus has moved into Curious Creatures, but is still adjusting to his/her new home.
Does anyone know if the zoo will be keeping Sloth/sun bears in the collection? I just realized the few things on Wild Asia Ive seen did not include them.
I haven't heard that they will be returning. I would think the sun bear would not be returning. Scruffy is at the Cleveland Zoo and with her age, I'm not sure if they'd want to move her again.
The tropical Asian bears are not currently in the plans. I do not think they see it as a necessity right now with the grizzlies. It is sounding like the zoo’s future includes primates, rhinos, and more African animals.
Pride of Africa expansion could come with new tax levy Akron Zoo: Levy increase will help fund exhibit expansion
