    Master Plan

The Aquarium and Zoo for Albuquerque has posted a master plan. For those of you who haven't been to the Aquarium the towns Botanical Gardens are located in the Same area and also have Master Plan up.

Changes to the Aquarium include a Northern River Otter Exhibit (instead of at the Zoo), and a larger gallery for New Mexico Fish.

    Otters Updated

    Election Results:
The bond passed 70% Yes, 30% No for the Bio park, specifically the Aquarium. The bond suggest the city will fund 2 million dollars for the exhibit proposed on the aquariums Master plan.

    Otters to the Aquiruim Articles

Here are some older, but unposted articles on the North American River Otter Exhibit to be added to the Aquarium:

Otters in Albuquerque: Planning Underway for New Exhibit at City’s Biopark | Construction Reporter News

There oughta be more otters | Albuquerque Journal News

The bond has been passed and the Master plan and blue prints are in stone. The idea is to have the exhibit open in 2016, though, with the biopark that I do love, I anticipate a later arrival date just by experience of how things work here. The bond allowed for $2 million to set them up near the aquariums entrance. The last $500,000 is to come from "other sources". The zoo formally housed otters in the 1980's.

North American River Otter Exhibit opened on 7/3/18. The exhibit is a multilevel exhibit with an outdoor viewing with a large pool that has an underwater viewing area.

Out of the 5 or 6 facilities that have the species on display the underwater viewing pool may be the largest I have see but thjis is seen by videos on press releases. The female residence are named Chaos and Mayhem, both female nuisance animals from Louisiana. The YOutube link shows all the exhibit!

As of November 16 (2020), the aquarium is closed by order of the governor due to the rise in Covid-19 cases. No reopening date has been set.

Great bump of a thread, I did not know we had one for them.

I saw the otter habitat in person, it is one of the best parts of this small aquarium. The whole aquarium/garden/insectarium development is really a lot of fun.

Do you think that it would be possible to see the zoo, aquarium, and insectarium in one day? Is this something that you did?

Absolutely, I saw all three, as well as the botanical gardens and all complete by 3:30. None of places are really that large. We were at the zoo at opening, ate lunch off site and then did the other three in the afternoon.

I've also heard that it's easy to visit all three attractions in one day. I did the zoo and aquarium together in 2011, but BUGarium wasn't around back then, as that voter-approved bond project had its grand opening in 2016.

Was your schedule something like this?

    ABQ BioPark Zoo 9-12:30

    Lunch 12:30-1:30

    ABQ BioPark Aquarium 1:30-2:30

ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden & BUGarium 2:30-3:30

When the zoo's 4.5-acre, $30 million Asia expansion opens (late 2023 or early 2024), then that will add some time to a day as there will be new exhibits for Tigers, Snow Leopards, Steller's Sea Eagles, Siamangs and Orangutans.

Yep, that was pretty much the schedule. I think we stayed at the zoo until about 12, we had lunch over at a food hall place called Sawmill Market.
Yeah, that is going to be very nice. The tigers and snow leopards current exhibits are small and out dated.

On August 7th, the aquarium released its 2023 GRT Annual Report which has plans for a new interactive outdoor space near its docked shrimp boat, improvements/renovations to the Tingley Shoreline area, and a new behind-the-scenes building called the Science, Health and Aquatic Research Center (SHARC). It was also announced that the aquarium, along with the botanical gardens, will be connected under a singular gate and a large plaza to get to the different facilities.
