    How funny that you've shared the article, I was just about to do the same. A very interesting read - were there any other well known survivors of the war?

    The hippoptamus "Knautschke", born in Berlin Zoo in 1943, was still alive on my first few visits to Berlin Zoo; he died in 1988.

    Incidentally, in his book "Such Agreeable Friends" Bernard Grzimek gives a very moving account of the wartime bombing of Berlin Zoo.

    The fact he survived for 3 years alone in Berlin during wartime after his escape is pretty remarkable. How did he do it?
