Could Binturongs be in this black-and-white zoo as they are black and white. Snow Leopards, too. Strictly (or mabye mostly) black and white penguin species. Fish (just to give bongorob some ideas) Great White Shark Whale Shark Giant Oceanic Manta Ray freshwater shark (any species) New Zealand Longfin Eel Welsh Catfish European Eel Murray Cod Mekong Giant Catfish Chao Phraya Catfish Greenland Shark Giant Barb sawfish (any species) Goliath Grouper
Don´t forget Sunfish, Devilfish, Ratfish and Wobbegong! My Top 5 list for a regular visitor would include (one for category): - Elephant - Penguin - Crocodile - Poison Dart Frog - Sand Tiger Shark For a Zoochatter: - Cape Buffalo - Atlantic Puffin - Komodo Dragon - Chinese Giant Salamander - Ocean Sunfish I have seen all of these, and they are all impressive animals.
Meh, there's a lot of grey area on both of those animals. At least with White Tigers they look black and white. All in all it's amazing how often the Black and White combination is repeated among animal species!
Specify on the devilfish. Nice new avatar by the way. Iberian Lynx, yes? I have seen elephants (African Bush, Sri Lankan, and Indian), penguins (King, Gentoo, Southern Rockhopper, Chinstrap, African, Humboldt, and Magellanic), quite a number of crocodilians (2 caiman species, both alligator species, and I don't know how many others), many species of poison dart frog, and Sand Tiger Sharks. I say a visitor might want to see wolves (I've seen Red, Mackenzie Valley, and Maned), Lions (just Transvaal), Tigers (Malayan, Amur, and Sumatran), Giraffes (Masai and Baringo), and bears (Polar, Grizzly, American Black, Asiatic Black, Panda, and Sloth) before some of those. I guess I check out on the regular visitor's list. I've only seen Komodo Dragons and Atlantic Puffins on the ZooChattian's list. I'd imagine it would be a little more unusual for some of us, though. Again, it can be more than five.
Devilfish is a type of ray similar to the manta, and it is also known as devil ray. They are quite hansome, and i think i like the one in Lisbon Oceanarium currently more than the manta. The five species for the regular visitor are quite common, and those who i think one should see before death. From the Zoochatters list, i didn´t choose animals that were very rare, but that are very weird and impressive. EDIT: Yes, it´s an iberian lynx!
That would be good. There are so few pics of Iberian Lynxes, and when someone takes one, it´s a bad or a night one. This one is from the Iberian Lynx Reproduction Centre in Silves, Portugal. They had 17 babies last year, that´s something that should be seen by everyone!
No, it is not. There are some centres like this in Spain also, and all the public can see are some photos they sometimes post or videos of litters. But as i already explained in another thread the iberian wolf centre in Mafra was also closed to the public but with some recent cash problems it´s sometimes open.
I now can see that. We may continue this conversation by personal message, in a new thread about this or maybe here?
This seems like an appropriate place to continue as I'm sure this species is on many people's bucket lists. So is there any chance of an average person to see this species?
Arizona Docent got to see it, and he told the story here: http://www.zoochat.com/339/iberian-lynx-trip-report-184364/ There´s no chance you can see one now in captivity, i believe.
I'm honoured. I was considering myself lucky to have seen a few 'bucket animals', but never expected that I'd nake the list.
Binturong certainly wouldn't count. All the real b/w species have strongly contrasting colours which is probably why we find them visually attractive. And the nearer they are to 50-50 between the two colours, the greater the contrast. I'm sure I could find a few more animals for my Zoo but have perhaps deviated from this thread enough now- my Moderator perk.
I agree Binturong wouldn't count. I was using the phrase grey area to be literal. Too much grey, not enough white! But since I started this distraction, I think I'll make a separate thread in the Fantasy Zoos section.
I've deviated from other people threads many times so I guess getting mine deviated isn't that bad. Just had to throw the Binturong out there as it is on my bucket list. It's not a very rare species in zoos or in the wild but I haven't seen one and they've always fascinated me (many things do)
This is a fun thread. Several animals I hadn't heard of which surprised me. Other than the blue whale, not sure what's on my current list. A couple that were on the list include aye-aye and tuatara, but finally got to see those. Hmm, I guess mountain gorilla would also be on my current list. Like I'm sure most of us, I'd like to get to every zoo and also see every animal!
