Hey folks- no details on this at present, but as I was leaving Melbourne Zoo today at closing time there were keepers scrambling towards the front half of the zoo. A keeper shouted at me as he went past that they had an escaped animal. I asked what it was and I *think*, but am not sure, that he said an orangutan. If anyone hears any news please post here.
Well if it was a successful recapture the public will probably never hear about it. Zoos, understandably, prefer to keep these things hushed up. I was at Taronga once when a young keeper climbed way up into a tree to recapture a tree kangaroo. It was a real Tarzan act.
It was a gorilla -looked like a young male. Came out of the bushes in front of me near the zoo entrance. Ambling fairly sedately, but as came closer to a groups of about 4 kids & 2 adults they screeched, and it took off much quicker towards the mandrils. Luckily it was around closing time so the front gates were closed. I presume it was recaptured fairly quickly. At last report I was just sitting outside the toilets down near the Mandrils.
My mum said she saw the report and that's where I heard it from. She said it was the weather being filmed there.
I saw it on the news over here last night. Here's one of the many news reports from the net Great ape escape - gorilla goes walkabout at Melbourne Zoo | theage.com.au
