    It’s an insect, and I think a bee rather than a mimetic fly; I also think the flower being visited is North American.

    It is a North American flower, specifically a Culver's Root (Veronicastrum virginicum).

    Difficult to guess from the photo, but it looks more a hoverfly to me.
    The plant is Veronicastrum virginicum so yes, it's a North American plant.

    Edit: Ouch, birdsandbats already said the plant :confused::confused:

    It does look more mimic than bee, but I think nevertheless that it might be the Eastern Carpenter Bee Xylocopa virginica.
