I've been reading a lot about animals being off exhibit. While I'm sure there a variety of reasons for this, why is it that animals are taken off exhibit usually?

In my experience it can be for multiple reasons. We will take snakes off exhibit if they aren't eating regularly to see if that helps them. Other medical reasons might require an animal to be off exhibit so that staff can access them easier. And sometimes, there just aren't enough exhibits to display every animal a zoo owns. Currently we have our two species of ground hornbill switching off every other day in our currently empty Pallas' cat exhibit. We don't have a normal exhibit for them and if we had Pallas' cats, they would be off exhibit.
