Sadly NZ doesn't have a lot of species that are rare overall, so I haven't seen anything that most would consider too impressive, but I doubt most overseas Zoochatters have seen a jewelled gecko (Naultinus gemmeus), which I've seen at the Otago Museum. Tuatara are rare overseas as well. I need to go to Orokonui in spring to see Otago skinks too, but that hasn't happened yet so it doesn't count.

And that sound you hear is a hundred Zoochatters spitting their cups of tea over their keyboards...

Yeah, I should have clarified "exotic species".

One of the few NZ native species which quite a lot of us have seen, actually :p

It would have been more if I'd read it after getting my first of the day :p

Of course. In fact I'd argue seeing a rare species in the wild would be worth metaphorical bonus points

I probably will get lots of bonus points in that case:
    Galápagos penguin
    Marine iguana
    Blue footed boobie
    Galápagos sea lion
    Nazca boobie
    Darwin's finch
Galápagos land iguana (not in the wild)
    Unknown albatross species
    Resplendent quetzal
    Margay (not in the wild)

if you don't know what species it was, then how can you suggest few Zoochatters have seen it?

I originally put margay on my list thinking it was a real rarity but then I found out that, although it isn't particularly common, it is far from scarce and probably shouldn't be a contender for this list
Well aren't albatrosses in general rarely seen?

Would depend on where you are. I've seen hundreds of them. I could probably name a dozen Zoochatters off the top of my head who have seen albatross species.

During the 1990s Avifauna Vogelpark, in the Netherlands, had a black-footed albatross; I saw it there several times and, I assume, a number of other ZooChat members did too.

It's rare if you've never left the US. We only have three in the whole country last I checked.
