Another female calf has been born, on June 26th. Yay!!
Pygmy hippo baby makes public debut
This time it looks like mother Petra is looking after the calf well.
(I was so excited by this and wanting to post it here I felt like an overexcited teenager going"OMG, OMG". )

    Fantastic news.

Now two possible pairs for the next generation. This buys us some time to get some new blood into the region. I'd love to see pygmy hippos become as ubiquitous in our zoos as, say, siamangs or red pandas.

WONDERFUL news Jay, Just think of all those breeding years lost because they were not brought together sooner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets hope the the CWSR in Cairns can pop out a few as well

Does this now open a window on setting up a real conservation breeding programme for the species on its own in Aussie?

The and the cairns births only give us time by providing for the possibility to create one more generation. To me it doesn't seem as if it is actuallyhard to breed the species, simply neglect has bought us to a parlous situation. But there will be the need for new blood.

Jay I would have to agree with you, this species was neglected for years and allowed to fall between the cracks let us hope it never happens again.
Now we have another ray of hope :)
