I think the female came from Ponzan zoo in Poland and the male valatine went to johannersburg in south Africa. No breeding yet though. Patna ( sorry he's not called Panza) Came from Berlin zoo.

 

Thanks for that news. I think the other(current) male is called a funny foreign name like 'Escroltch' I believe both males\came from the same East European zoo and may have been brothers- but from seperate litters. When I visited only one showed itself readily- I'll bet that's the one Chester have still got.... It will be a while probably before they are breeding but bound to happen. The different individual 'spectacle' face markings are interesting in this species.

Indian rhino- Patna from Berlin- I think he was partially handraised as a baby as he was injured by his mum, broke a leg or something. Also he could be the son of Gaidi, who was at Chester- BUT East Berlin also breed them too and I know the male at one of these two zoos is too aggressive to mate, so their female is sent to the other zoo's bull for breeding. East Berlin's bull is 'Belur'- I can't remember which is the aggressive male but he bites the females during mating so they won't stand for him any more....

 

So Chester has A baby from Their own Rhino. They could never have done that before. From my knowledge they only had a male. He only sat at the back of the house. Gaidi wasn't aggressive. He seemed to really be missed by the Keepers.

 

Next time you go you could ask if they know which male fathered their rhino. They'll probably say it was Gaidi who I think is the one that breeds okay, and its the East Berlin male who can't be used.

 

I'll ask when I'm on the next members trip.

They do have indeed a remarkable collection of 7 species of curassow/guan:
- Crax rubra (great currasow)
- Ortalis canicallis (Chaco Chachalaca)
- Crax daubentoni (yellow-knobbed currasow)
- Pauxi pauxi (helmeted currasow)
- Crax globulosa (wattled curassow)
- Crax blumenbachii (red-billed currasow)
- Aburria aburri (Wattled guan)

There's also an impressive turaco collection:
- Tauraco persa buffoni (Buffon's green turaco)
- Tauraco fischeri (fisher's turaco)
- Corythaeola cristata (great blue turaco)
- Musophaga violacea (violet turaco)
- Tauraco leucolophero (white-crested turaco)
- Tauraco leucotis (white-cheeked turaco)
- Tauraco schuettii (Black-billed turaco)

 

Do you have a list of their whole collection?
What pheasants do they keep?
Have you been to Parc Paradisio? Do you have a species list for it?

 

Seeing your review of Parc Paradisio on toddys website Jonathon, i never realised they had such a large collection of mammals, i thought they were strictly a bird garden.

Listing Antwerp zoo's species is almost impossible... it changes often and their collection is really big.
Concerning the pheasants, they have Delacour's fireback pheasant (Lophura ignita macartneyi), Diard's pheasant (Lophura diardi) curently backstage), Salvadori's pheasant (Lophura inornata), Edward's pheasant (Lophura edwardsi), Vietnam's pheasant (Lophura hatinhenis). They also have Satyre and Temminck's tragopan (they used to have an old male Blyth's as well).

I have a little question concerning the writhed hornbill... you're talking about Aceros waldeni right?? Do you mean that Chester Zoo holds a pair of Aceros waldeni?? Is it visible?? is it possible to take pictures?? If yes, I'm coming right now!!!

 

[off-topic] Currently under construction in Paradisio is the "Kingdom of Ganesh", an area with exhibit's for at least pig-tailed macaque and asian elephants and some smaller animals. Opening is due somewhere in 2008 (i believe within the first 6 months at least) [/off-topic]

 

Sorry Pedro, I'm not an Aceros Waldeni. I'm aceros leucocephalas.

There are many names for both species:

Aceros Waldeni- Visayan wrinkled hornbill, Visayan Writhed hornbill, Walden's hornbill, Writhe-billed hornbill, Visayan writhed-billed hornbill, writhe-billed hornbill, rufous headed hornbill and panay wrinkled hornbill.

Aceros leucocephalas-Mindanao wrinkled hornbill, writhed hornbill, Mindanao writhe-billed hornbill, White headed hornbill and wrinkled hornbill.
