Yes It's a spectacled bear, good guess :). They live together with coati's.

What Penguins do they keep now?

When I went in 2003, there were king, Macaroni and rockhopper.

The rockhoppers left and gentoopenguins were added, so they still have 3 species in there. (and they also still have the humboldtpenguins in the outside enclosure near the playground.)

It's great to hear that the lions will get a nex enclosure (they badly need it). How does the future look for their tigers and birds of prey? I have never seen brids of prey being kept in such appauling conditions as the ones in Antwerpen, and think that they should move out immediatly (especially those near the ape house). Otherwise, it's a pretty good zoo :)

In the enlargement project of the zoo are following projects:

    - Savanne (more space for girafs and other animals)
    - Congo biotope (more space for chimps, gorillas, okapi's)

Those are 2 important projects in the enlargement project but it's certainly not all that they will do. I think they will release concrete plans in the summer of 2008.
The lions will move this year to a new lion exhibit. What they gonna do with the old exhibit is still not sure, but probably the tigers will get advantage of it :).

The Antwerp Zoo has got 1.210.000 visitors in 2007. Every year they get more visitors because the zoo spends a lot of money each year in all kinds of projects (also in science & education). They already said that also in 2008 money will be no problem. So that's good for the animals and visitors :)...It's worth a visit when you're around!

A congo biotope sounds great, especially since Antwerpen is alreday famous for their okapis, congo peacocks and eastern lowland gorillas :). Remember to post here on the forum when you know something ;)

When i visited Antwerpen in 2006, I saw a vulture of some sort in the last enclosure of Hippotopia. On the zoomap, it said that the exhibit was supposed to hold bongos, but that was clearly not true (though the exhibit looked like a good bongo enclosure). Can you tell me what lives in the exhibit now?

Actually it does hold a small herd of bongo. The vulture is a griffon vulture, the last of his species in the zoo. It's full of bamboo, to give shelter to the shy bongo's.
On the large photo of Marc, you'll find this enclosure right under the hippo pool and the large aviary.
The smaller aviary on the left holds a pair of hornbills (Ceratogymna bucinator) and some other birds.

Quit amateuristic but maybe it will make things clear for you:

    - Green = Hippotopia zone (yellow: hippo's, red: malasian tapirs)
    - Blue: now Bongo's but there used to be a vulture sort there (don't know wich one)
    - Black: Spectacled bears & Coati's.

Since a few days there is a new site of the KMDA (Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde Antwerpen) or in English the RZSA (Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp).

The RZSA owns the Antwerp Zoo (since 1843), the animal park Planckendael (since 1956) and nature reserve 'De Zegge', all in Flanders, Belgium.

It's a very interessting site if you want to know more about it (also in English):
