The Falklands Expedition | Dudley Zoological Gardens

This is posted on Dudley's very good daily news page.

Firstly I dont remember elephant seals at the zoo and secondly it shows how things were done in the old days with getting animals from the wild.
The story doesn't exactly give much info but it would be good to know how such things were done in the 70's and before.

I'm not at expert on penguin holding but it didn't look good to me either.

I remember Elephant Seals being kept in an exhibit opposite what was then the Moat Cafe. As far as I am aware Scotia organised more than one expedition to the South Atlantic, so the ones I remember could have been from an earlier expedition (I was a regular visitor to Dudley with my parents whilst living in Shrewsbury from April 1971 to September 1974). I recall quite a large number at first that seemed to have dwindled by the time of each subsequent visit, maybe through transfers to other Scotia collections, sales or of course deaths. A combination of all three would seem probable. Of course in the early 1970s the Sealion Pools had been converted for Cuddles and Bottle-nosed Dolphins.
