Georgia Aquarium?s Position on Future Collection of Cetaceans from the Wild | Beluga Whales: An Uncertain Future Exceptions will be made for rescue situations. It's another blow for the US beluga population.
Unfortunately being so public about this is really really good for Georgia Aquarium in these dark days but yeah... really bad for the Belugas in North America, and perhaps cetaceans in general.
They're at 46 now, 23 of which are captive bred, and 6-7 pregnant females due to give birth this summer, which will put them above 50!
I keep hoping that somehow Marineland and the US beluga exhibit holders can come to terms to allow some more of the Marineland genetics into the US. Not sure that will happen after the orca situation with SeaWorld.
The Canadian aquarium mentioned at the end of this article sounds an awful lot like Marineland. https://www.marketplace.org/2016/08/17/world/importing-beluga-whale-theres-form
