Giant Anteater Tamandua Maned Wolf Bush Dog Okapi Aardvark Kiwi Sand Cat Fennec Fox Rock Hyrax Additionally, how many zoos in Canada still breed elephants (either one of African or Asiatic)?
I don't know the answer to most of those but I can tell you there are no maned wolves or okapi in Canada. African Lion Safari in Rockton is the only facility in Canada that has successfully bred elephants of either species in recent years. However, Granby is attempting to breed their two younger African elephants but they may be unsuccessful as their cow may be too old.
Big fat no to many of them. I know there are fennec foxes and hyrax. Everything else is a no. Parc Safari has fennec foxes. Someone else might have them too but I cant think of who off the top of my head. Calgary has 3 hyrax. An older pair and their son who will be getting a mate when possible from San Diego. Granby will be picking up 4 males from San Diego as well to establish a bachelor group. There might be other hyrax Im not aware of. Winnipeg is a top priority to receive a breeding pair of tamandua as soon as they become available. @Animals R AMAZING! is correct about elephant breeding. The only point I can add is that semen from Parc Safari's male is being used in AI attempts in the US but does that really count as Canadian breeding? Maybe half breeding since he is doing half the baby making job here.
Giant Anteater: Magnetic Hill Tamandua: Miller Zoo Rock Hyrax: Edmonton Valley, Calgary Fennec: Parc Safari, and I think a few more in Ontario and Quebec as well.
I thought there might be a giant anteater out there because Calgary had them prior to the flood and I know they had been relocated in Canada. Where they went I didnt recall and if they were still alive after so many years was a mystery. I could be wrong and the anteater might not be one of Calgary's or a descendant. The tamandua is a surprise.
Does any zoo in Ontario currently has Wolverine? I only know Zoo St-Felicien has one, but that zoo locates in Quebec and very remote
I don't believe the are any wolverine held in Ontario, Toronto had plans for them but they never came to pass. Wolverine are somewhat rare I believe there's a proposed SSP species survival plan for them but don't know if it's been passed. The Detroit Zoo is probably the closest and they are Eurasian Wolverines.
Jungle Cat World in Orono has at least one Fennec Fox. Saunders County Critters near Ottawa had Rock Hyrax but I went about five years ago so not sure if they still do. 10+ years back Safari Niagara had a Tamandua, I feel like there might still be one in one of the private Ontario zoos but can't say for sure.
Even Zoo Sauvage's wolverines are European. I remember when they got them they said they were imported from Europe, something tells me Sweden but I could be mistaken about that as its been a few years now. I think every wolverine in North American zoos or just about so is European. I remember reading somewhere in the past that Europeans were preferred because there had been more success in capturing and breeding them then there had been with North American wolverines. Cant remember where or when I read that. Might be wrong for all I know. Frankly I dont care where the wolverine is from as long as its a wolverine and we get one in Toronto. @kingoffreaks, wolverines are still an SSP candidate program, so not a full fledge one yet.
Jungle Cat World's fennec fox passed away about a year ago. They posted her passing on their facebook page.
