You keep repeating that free contact is outdated. However 90% of worlds elephants in human care, in Asia, are and will continue to be kept in free contact. Protected contact has clear monetary advantage for the zoo, that is reduces the risk of high compensation if a keeper is killed. However, majority of keepers themselves prefer free contact, because close contact with animals is the primary draw of this profession, despite the well known risk. No risk no fun. It is argued that protected contact is preferable for elephant welfare. However, a competent keeper is seen by elephants as a trusted herd member, so longer contact can actually mean less stress. It is also clear that protected contact carries a medical risk if a calf needs a medical intervention. Elephants in Pairi Daiza, just discussed, are regularly taken out of their enclosure to bathe. This is an obvious enrichment which would be impossible in protected contact. Elephants in other zoos were taken out to feed on green vegetation, and in one German zoo, to swim in a river crossing the zoo. So I am agnostic, but I never seen a really good evaluation of strength and weight of pros and cons of both contact types.
