This is a group of birds I have been increasingly interested in the past several months, that are also becoming increasingly rare in North American facilities owning to their generally low breeding success. So why not amass a list of which facilities house what? I'll start with what I know already with reasonable certainty. Great Indian Hornbill Toronto Zoo 1.1 Houston Zoo 1.1 Lowry Park Zoo 1.? Zoo Miami 1.? Rhinoceros Hornbill Dallas World Aquarium 2.2? Houston Zoo 1.1 Cincinnati Zoo ?.1 Toledo Zoo 1.1 Milwaukee County Zoo 1.1 Knobbed Hornbill Woodland Park Zoo ?.1 St. Augustine Alligator Farm 1.1 San Diego Zoo Safari Park ?.? Wreathed Hornbill Dallas Zoo 1.1 San Antonio Zoo 1.1 Blyths/Papuan Hornbill Peoria Zoo 1.? Lincoln Park Zoo 1.1 Wrinkled Hornbill Honolulu Zoo 1.1 San Diego Zoo 1.1 Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill San Diego Zoo 1.1 Lowry Park Zoo 3.2 San Diego Zoo Safari Park ?.? Oriental Pied Hornbill ???? Palawan Hornbill ???
Thank you for starting a topic on this interesting group of birds. I am also interested in any info that can be provided. Miami has 1.1. Saint Louis also keeps the species, and San Francisco has a male. Also Nashville (the species’ most successful breeder), Philadelphia, National Aviary, Saint Louis, Virginia, Jacksonville, and presumably others that I am not aware of. Bronx keeps a pair behind the scenes that used to be on exhibit. Busch Gardens Tampa also has a pair. Sylvan Heights, Atlanta, and Jacksonville each have a pair. Oakland keeps the species. Based off of recent visits by friends, neither has the species anymore, at least not on exhibit. Brevard and Fort Worth have the species. Bronx has at least 1.0 in JungleWorld. I believe Staten Island also has the species, if I identified it correctly. I saw an unsigned female. Bronx, DWA, and Lion Country Safari each keep a pair (presumably 1.1). Oddly enough, LCS’s are kept with squirrel monkeys.
Sounds good, thank you everyone! (Especially Jay!) I'll do a bit more digging tonight and tomorrow and post an updated list tomorrow night

Fortunately, the North American asiatic hornbill population is looking not the worst, however the Rhinoceros and Wrinkled populations definitely surpass all the other populations by a sizable portion. It is also of interest about the Rhino population, that we have AT LEAST two separate sub-species, and it would appear the SSP has no qualms about mixing them. A number of pairs are formed between the Borneans, Javans, and non subspecies birds. Of another area of interest to note, there are a smattering of birds held in private hands, I am aware of at least one pair of wreathed hornbills, and a number of oriental pied hornbill, there are AT LEAST 20-30 birds in private hands, and likely more, a number of which are breeding pairs.
Oakland zoo does have 1.1 wreathed hornbills. I never heard of them having more. I’ll look into it more.
