Okay, so Xylitol is her real name, how come I haven't been able to hear about her?

Maybe JASRAJ or MAXIMUS could be sent to berlin?

Max (= Pentagon) is still at Prague. Today I saw Max together with Aisha outside and Parys inside the big cat house.

I have an idea;): I really like the studbook for asiatic lions, but I with I could make a studbook, for another lion subspecies: The large, extremely rare, you-know-what lion?

If its the one I think your referring to, it would be interesting to see what you come up with- unfortunately it seems to be a never ending story riddled with confusion and dubious animals, making your task much more difficult.

    BINGO!
Amazing animals, aren't they? My favorite lion subspecies!
Hannover is going to start a breeding program with their 2 females and a newely aquired male from Port Lympne.

Not so much of a breeding programme considering the genetics of the lions at Port Lympne. Slightly watered down in terms of purity!

Yes, while Port Lymne have stopped breeding them it seems, even to the point of castrating the breeding male and maybe another too.

They are probably happy to find a home for one of their other males- presumably Milo or Moonlight from their last litter?

There is so much controversy over the origins of the so-called Barbary Lions. DNA testing has revealed even the Moroccan 'Rabat Zoo' lions, previously thought the purest, are very unlikely to be Barbary or even part Barbary- so as the ones at places like Port Lympne, Belfast and some others are descended from these, they can't be either.

But some zoos prefer to ignore the science and carry on with them.

Apologies for digressing from main topic of this thread; Asian Lion (though the two species are/were thought to be closely related...)

The plan at the moment is that once ALP is pretty much complete we will put more work into our Sumatran Tiger database.

Except for the fact that barbary lions are much larger, and have a more impressive mane. Not to mention that they're extinct in the wild.

Afraid we will have to agree to disagree over this matter considering that i think that they are EXTINCT fullstop both in the wild and captivity!

Was going to post the same message but you got there first.

The only thing they probably can still do is 'recreate' it by selective breeding for the specific known characteristics/appearance, which is what the failed/abandoned 1970's breeding programme was all about with its selection process- Lions being graded in a rigid category system, and only the best ones were then used for further breeding.

However most of the Zoos keeping them nowadays seem to be just maintaining or breeding from their existing stock without any planned selection. I am not sure there is any point to this, and it just increases the numbers of surplus Lions needing fresh homes.

    Smiles all round!

Just heard via the project's own website that Mulhouse Zoo welcomed a new litter of 2:2 cubs on 16th June (Sita X Jetpur) :D The males have been named Dhari and Timbi whilst the girls are Kanja and Mahia :)

What a year for births so far! :D

Absolutely brilliant! 14 cubs so far in 2010! I'm absolutely delighted!

And of course that won't be it as we know they want the Cologne female pregnant.

The gender and names of the four lion cubs at Zurich have been revealed:

The only male is named Kuvam (means sun).

The three females are named Kalika (bud), Keladi (name of a queen) and Kanya (name of a goodness, virgin, daughter).

They have already been intruduced to their father and to their elder siblings.

Ah right. I though it was all males but that's Google translate for you.

Let's hope for more litters on the way!

Current cub population of 5:9. Promising. Hope there is at least one more litter born before the end of the year, possibly a UK based collection?
