The ears of seven species of mammals in a particular order. Can you name the species and then break the cipher to find what I have hidden?
I expect you will need to identify most of them before you can discover the answer, so I will not comment on partial answers until everyone has had time to try the puzzle.

I met bongorob at Chester today and after I had pulled his leg about the 'hunting fog' (which sounds like something from an old Hammer horror film), he pointed out an ambiguity in my question, for which I apologise. I did not mean that all these mammal species are classified in the same Order. I was trying to explain that you will need to look at the names of the species in the same order that the photographs are displayed to get the best chance of breaking the cipher.
As the previous quiz was all done and dusted within 24 hours, I wanted to make this one a bit harder. There are quite a few right answers in the lists above, but no-one was even close with the third photo, so I have decided to replace it.

I think this makes things a little easier, because there are actually 2 correct answers for this species. For the others, don't change species that you are sure of, but consider alternatives for the ones you aren't so sure about - you may find this helps to spot a pattern. One final little clue: the hidden thing is mineral (rather than animal, vegetable or abstract) and it has no connection to ZooChat as far as I know.

So? Does it help you to break the cipher? If it does, you may be right: but if it leads to a dead end, you will know you have gone wrong somewhere :)

Why haven't you changed your third species?

People are getting warmer, but the third image is not a prairie dog (although it is not dissimilar). Remember that cryptographers look for patterns, it may be easier to see the pattern here if you use capital letters in the names as you would in a title (like Brum has done in the post above).

I agree that number three is a souslik, originally I thought serval for four but have changed my mind due to the white on the ear. Now I'm going for -

    1. Caracal
    2. Pygmy Hippo
    3. Souslik
    4. Ocelot
    5. Onager
    6. Okapi
    7. Giant Otter
