Does anyone know what happened to the former elephant exhibit? Does it still remain empty, or has something filled the space?
from Tripadvisor, October 2016: "...the Elephant enclosure has been turned into some sort of Segway trial playground and there is absolutely nothing outside the enclosure where the elephants are supposed to be to explain why there isn't any, so lots of people looked confused and disappointed." Australia Zoo hasn't had elephants for around three years now, but they keep saying things along the lines of "we are getting them back soon". Their website says the enclosure is "under renovation" (although that is more to do with their website being rubbish and infrequently updated). From the Tripadvisor quote it sounds like the exhibit is basically untouched, at least as far as it still looks to the visitors that elephants should be inside.
There is a new elephant holding area one can see on google maps just to the right of the off show White rhino holding areas, its a new barn and two yards!
Good, I hope that means elephants are in the near future. I would love to see a breeding group in there, as its absolutely huge for the 3 aging females it had previously.
Had read they had received the dominant female at Perth ("Tilly") and at least three of her daughters.. Wondering if the others are also her offspring or are from another zoo?? Unless those plans fell through and they got them all from elsewhere..?
Labor announces funding for Australia Zoo - 9News A re-elected Palaszczuk government would give Australia Zoo $140,000 to support their animal hospital and koala habitat preservation works. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk travelled to the zoo on day 26 of the Queensland election campaign to announce the funding, which she said was vital to ensuring the zoo could continue to care for injured wildlife.
Story version one: Terri Irwin quits Australia Zoo to pursue American dreams Story version two: Rep denies claim Terri Irwin will 'quit Australia Zoo' | Daily Mail Online She's the matriarch of one of the world's most famous families. And Terri Irwin's representatives have firmly denied a New Idea report alleging that she has 'stepped down as boss' at Australia Zoo in order to spend more time in the United States. 'It's just tabloid gossip', an Australia Zoo official told Daily Mail Australia on Monday. ....
Given Labor has won the Queensland state election (almost certainly will form next government) this money should be forthcoming.
I haven't looked to much into this topic, but what is the master plan of this zoo? It's website doesn't make it seem as if it has a large collection.
By overseas standards the animals collection is quite poor, Yes it was a former Reptile park but at the end of the day I will not pay $59 just to see what they do have. The website did say they had a ten year plan to build what they wanted to do there but I believe now 12 years later only stage one of the 3 has been completed I could be wrong but it appears since Steve is not there now progress seems to be down to a snails pace the last add that I know of was just meerkats.
