I've taken out Buller's Bird Park (Victoria) and Bordertown Wildlife Park (South Australia) as Steve tells me they are now closed. White Hills Botanic Gardens (Victoria) no longer has animals on site apparently so that's been taken out as well. Steve has also been told that the Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda (Queensland) has been closed as well - I've left that in for now, but if anyone can confirm that would be good. Newly added since the initial post are the Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation Centre (formerly Chewton Dingo Farm) (Victoria) and Parrot Garden (NSW).

Quite an impressive list, and thanks Chlidonias for posting it! I counted approximately 165 establishments, and that takes into account Steve's latest post in regards to 5 additional closures. Australia is rich with an abundance of many wildlife parks, but the downside is that there are only 4 major zoos: Taronga, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. It is difficult to believe how so few locations have large numbers of exotic animals when one sees the long list that was provided, but are there many private locations with exotics that go unannounced to the public?

The answer is fairly simple, and one that speaks to Australian history and demographics. The four zoos are located in four mainland state capitals which together with the fifth, Brisbane, are the only cities in Australia with over a million people. Further they each contain at least 2/3rds of the population of their respective states (Brisbane excepted, which is a little under half). The next largest Australian city is just over 500,000, then 400,000, then 300,000 then three with over 200,000 and so on. It is not only large zoos that are concentrated in these five cities, it is drama, opera and dance companies, major art galleries and museums, major sporting venues and events, major hospitals, research institutions, corporate headquarters, and so on. The only odd thing about this is that Brisbane never gained a major zoo. In all other respects it follows the pattern of the other major cities.

thanks. Its so difficult figuring out what's still open and what's closed from the internet. Usually if the local government sites for the region say they're still open I have included them. But the above five have now been removed.

thanks. All added. I actually had Serendip on my original list but omitted it because I didn't realise they also had aviaries and such there (I thought it was just a wild bird sanctuary)

I know but apparently they have a "sanctuary" on site as well which can be visited. Its not mentioned on their website but in an online interview they said that was the case. I'll leave it on the list just in case.

thanks. I wasn't sure if was really my place to post an Australian zoo list given that its not even my country and I've only been to a tiny fraction of the listed facilities, but it would be fantastic to have a list like this for all the regions in Zoochat and its not such a great undertaking for Australia (I'm not even going to think about trying it for somewhere like the UK or Germany!!!)

With regards to your comment about lack of large exotics you are quite right. There are a lot of collections listed (and certainly many I've not yet included) but I would say the majority of them fall into the categories of bird parks (exhibiting largely common avicultural subjects), small native fauna sanctuaries, and there's also quite a few that are just random animal collections in city parks etc. As MRJ says (and as I know you already know), the bulk of the Australian population is concentrated in specific areas - unlike the case in USA or Europe - so there is a very limited market for large exotic collections. Having said that there are many small fauna parks that could quite reasonably be expected to be able to add space for the Australasian regional breeding programmes for smaller exotics (monkeys, small cats, etc)

I hope that all made sense.....I'm just typing on the fly

the Sydney Attractions Card still includes it in their list and I can't see anything on Google about them closing. I'll remove it if I get confirmation from you or someone else.

I believe that it is still open however it has been in the papers recently for being really run down and not up to scratch to house animals

Thanks nrg800. I can no longer edit the original post myself (the 48 hours is up) so I'll keep adding new collections on this thread and when there's a few more I'll get one of the mods to edit the whole list for me.

    NSW:
*Auburn Botanic Gardens (Sydney) Auburn Council | Residents | Parks and Recreation | Auburn Botanical Gardens
It has both an aviary complex and a fauna reserve for natives (kangaroos, wombats etc) apparently

you're right, the Koala Park Sanctuary is still open. I put a couple of those recent stories in this thread: http://www.zoochat.com/24/koala-park-trouble-198388/#post404561

Koala Conservation Centre on Phillip Island is a managed population inside an enclosure, and also apparently has some wallabies.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens has a very nice tropical house that has some invert exhibits and apparently two bird species (I didn't see them)

From their website, Feathers Sanctuary in Darwin appears to be an bed & breakfast with a lot of wild birds around it, and does not appear to display any animals, so should probably be removed.

    thanks.

*I think I did originally look at the Koala Conservation Centre and couldn't work out if it was captive or wild so left it off the list. I guess I'll add it whenever I get the list next edited :)

*Also will add Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

*For the Feathers Sanctuary, their homepage says this:
and this site Australian native birds at Feathers Sanctuary, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia says:
I'm not sure if I should leave it or remove it; it isn't a public collection as such, but it is open to view for anyone staying there....

*Speaking of which, what's the deal with Ashmore Palms on the Gold Coast? On another thread I saw they have a hyacinth macaw in their collection. Googling showed it to be a retirement home or something like that. Is it something that should be on the list? (Question for anyone who has been there, retired or not ;))

Interesting about Feathers, I didn't get that impression from their website, but obviously so.

However as you suggest that does raise the issue as to where you draw the line. I don't think that private collections which may be viewable on an incidental basis by patrons of an establishment should be included. Otherwise the list would extend towards infinity with every B&B with a couple of cockatiels in an aviary, or every doctors surgery with a tropical fish tank being a candidate.

Haven't been there but I believe it is a holiday park on the gold coast.
