I visited the Bali Safari and Marine Park in January. It is another of those beautiful collections whose sole purpose it is is to persuade as many visitors as possible to part with as much money as possible. The potential is there to do wonderous things for conservation but it is just not going to happen.

I refuse to call this place anything more than 'Bali Safari Park' if the full name isn't required. When I visited last summer I found that the 'Marine' area was still said to be 'under construction' and 'opening soon', which is the same thing @Peter Dickinson was told when he visited in early 2009. The 'Marine' zone is a draw which is advertised across the island, and only revealed as being unavailable after visitors pay the exorbitant entry fee (the equivalent of 60 US Dollars). I'd be interested to hear when it does actually open.

Any idea how and where they sourced their Chacoan maras from, either the zoo community or from in situ wild populations or S. American range states?

I would also be interested to learn about their Sumatran elephant group and composition at Bali Safari. They should have ... 31 individuals in all.

I have no idea, but they could possibly came from Batu Secret Zoo, since they used to display the maras and were probably keep off display before being sent to Bali, but that's just my speculation.

Aha, did not know that Batu Secret exhibited them previously ..., and makes sense.
