I must say I didn't knew Antwerp Zoo had it's own elephant crate, seen as the one from Emmen has been used repeatedly to move their elephants out of Antwerp.

On the Laafsekikkers Facebook page the head keeper of Planckendael commented that it was indeed theirs and that they had it specially made mostly to transport bull elephant in and out of Antwerp.

Yesterday the park allowed 4000 visitors. Bellewaerde only allows visitors to acces the attractions whit a mask, and they need to disinfect their hand before and afther every attraction. One of the more stricter amusementspark in Belgium. But it all goes well. Tomorrow they will allow up to 6000 visitors.

At this moment the zebra's are already allowed to acces the old elephant exhibit. At this moment they would like to grow the giraffe herd within the next years.

The new tigers (and new enrichment/ additional wooden scaffolds) are a nice update for the park. More updates in the collection are not planned within the next years. Only new golden-bellied capuchins are planned.

We also noticed that the common marmosets are no longer in the collection, only the emperor tamarin is visible at this moment (from the riverboat Jungle Mission).

Yup, these are exactly the moments I absolutely understand zoo-employees who are against making animal names public...

Bellewaerde has asked a permission to replace the old water purification installation with a new updated installation. The installation is next to the Bengal Express, a train ride through the exhibit from the lions (and tigers).

Sadly 4 European bisons (Bison bonasus) were euthanised last week, they were infected with a highly contagious and deadly bacteria. In order to protect the other bison, they were euthanised.

In April a Ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) was born.

Does anyone know the name of the Amur Leopards at the zoo? Is there a female besides Freddo, or is it just Freddo? And what happened to Vlada at the zoo, because I believe that Freddo and Vlada are full siblings.

After the last lion died last year, Bellewaerde now has new lions. The 12-year-old West African lion (Panthera leo senegalensis) Nestor came from Antwerp Zoo, and the 1,5-year-old and 2,5-year-old Barbary lionesses (Panthera leo leo) Numa and Maya came from Dvur Králové.

Their arrival is part of the European breeding programme, especially male Nestor has very important genes. It is intended that they will provide offspring.

The first encounter between two of the new lions at Bellewaerde Park went horribly wrong on Tuesday. Male Nestor bit lioness Maya to death.

All three lions were first given a chance to get used to each other's scent, behind bars. The keepers had seen no signs of aggression. After a few days, it was decided to let Nestor and Maya outside together. This went well at first, but the situation quickly changed. Both lions became aggressive and started fighting, with Nestor biting Maya on the neck. The keepers tried to save her, but Maya did not survive the fight.
