I was doing some rhino research and I found that the now extinct Black Rhino subspecies (D. b. bicornis) that used to inhabit the Cape of South Africa was nearly White Rhino sized. Is this really true? Also are there certain zoo specimens that because of nutrition grow larger than those typically found in the wild? I'm thinking of D. b. michaeli and D. b. minor here. Sometimes its hard to see how a rhino that is almost as tall as a white rhino can only weigh 2/3 as it's cousin (3,000 lbs max for black rhino). Anybody work with black rhinos that are exceptionally large specimens? I know that Fossil Rim and White Oak have D. b. minor and most other AZA and EAZA zoos have D. b. michaeli.
