African Lioness at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium

This picture was taken on a cold day around Christmas 2008. The lioness seemed to enjoy the heated rock on which she was lying.

    cheetahs are big cats because
-they are much bigger than the domestic house cat
-they hunt big animals like zebra, wildebeast and bufallo
-they are one of the big cats that live in africa
-they can live in harsh conditions and adapt very well

    No they're not because

So are the fishing cat, puma and lynx, but they are all small cats. Indeed, some housecats are "much bigger" than others, does that make large housecats big cats, too?

So does this make the hyena or nile crocodile a big cat? Actually, they almost exclusively hunt the calves of these big animals having sacrificed the strength needed to take them down for speed. Incidentally, leopard tend to hunt calves as well so this is clearly not a requirement for being a big cat.

And this makes them a big cat how? I'm beginning to think you're just posting this to have a laugh since this reason is essentially the same as saying "they're a big cat because . . . they're a big cat".

I was unaware that the brown rat was a big cat, thank you for informing me of this. Not only is this not a big cat entry requirement but, compared to many species, cheetahs are not particularly adaptable. Unlike the leopard, they do not inhabit the central African rainforests which their range surrounds, nor were they ever able to spead out from the Indian subcontinent due to the Himalayas being too much of a barrier for them, unlike the tiger which did make it across.

I'm a little late with this thread, but how exciting. I had no idea I won the Spring Babies contest. :) I'll have to look at my pictures and submit a big cat one soon.

cheetahs are not true big cats since they do not roar and do not have retractable claws.

My entry, if Snow Leopards are included.

Snow Leopard, Paradise Wildlife Park, 4th August 2010

Visited PWP when I went to feed the African Lions. Afterwards got to go to the snow leopards and this one was just lying there staring at me lazily. I later returned when it was raining and all 3 were sheltering under the wooden walkway beside the glass viewing area on the ground. My final walkround was when it stopped raining and this one was back in the same position as if he'd never left! That's when I took this photo
