This Winter Market Zoo in Newcastle was set up to overwinter the Animal Collection from Flamingo Park in North Yorkshire ... The Winter Zoo began in 1965 and ran until at least 1969 ... over the Winter period only ... amongst the collection were Lions , Tigers , Monkeys , Exotic Birds , Giraffe, Chimpanzees , Llamas , Elephants , Snakes and a Dolphin The Town Hall itself was demolished in 1973 Image the location of the Winter Zoo
At this very moment I am sat at work less than half a mile from that spot I'd take a photo of the current day location when I leave, but given its a Friday night and that's now the nightclub district there would be a rather different kind of wildlife around right now!
Plastic bucket? The mind was already boggling at the idea of housing elephants and giraffes entirely indoors.
You will find photos on the following link: The winter zoo which was housed in Newcastle's Bigg Market in the mid-1960s which partly answers the giraffe and elephant accommodation. Also a dolphin photo. If any one can give a sensible answer (though others may be enjoyed) why there is a cannon on the side of the pool I would be appreciative!
This would be nice if I could access more than the first four photographs. Any chance of a different format please?
