I don't know her name, thank you for this information, the one which I was talking about in the previous post is the mother of the baby and her mother is the other female in the group.
Today I went to the bioparco, some weeks ago they started the construction of the new orangutan exhibit, their next project is a meerkat exibit near the reptile house, some rheas were born in november.
Two days ago it was the 100th anniversary of Bioparco. Yesterday they have released their calendar for 2011:Here it is(only informations about animals). April:Opening of the refurbished enclosure for White napped mangabeys . June:Opening of the 'Titi House'. October:Opening of the Orangutan enclosure. December:Starting of the construction of the new tiger enclosure and of the aquarium. It doesn't mention the meerkat enclosure, perhaps they changed idea. The program may change.
@Sharak_Jek, Nice to see that Bioparco is moving along nicely with further improvements in the Centennial Year of the Zoo. You probably agree the Primate House and the tigers where high on the list of species in need of renovated or rebuilt exhibitry. K.B.
Concerning giraffe: I noted that ISIS now lists 1.2 unknowns, including a birth (which in on our EEP line of thought are in fact cross-breeds) and 0.2 rothschildi (which I think are 2 females of somewhat unclear origin from Czech Republic). All have some rothschildi bloodline, but also some unknown bloodline in them. It would be interesting to clarify the whole thing.
Only to be exact, first orangutan birth took place in Italy in 1930 in Rome. So far about 10 orangutan have born in Rome (not all have been reared). Also Turin Zoo had one baby but it was not reared.
Apparently the male they had, seized from a circus, was rothschildiwhile the two females aquired from Dvur Kralove were reticulata. Both females arrived pregnant but one calf doesn'survived. So I assume there are actually three pure-bred reticulated plus one or two 'hybrids'
Both Dvur females (Caroll and Cameron) are half rothschildi / half unknowns. So, there is no reticulata bloodline in them (as far as we studbook data wise would known). These were actually sent out from Dvur to allow them to breed from known full lineage individuals. (vis a vis: Schoenbrunn Wien received 0.2 of unknown bloodlines from Dvur too). The male you refer to is called probably called Rocco. Caroll had a first calf in 2006 at Roma (Cameron is her daughter). It seems that in 2010 one or other had another calf. It does not seem to make it any easier to get behind the facts.
Endangered species birth at Bioparco. An addax was born the 12th of January, sex is unknow, for the moment it spends more time in the stable.
Yesterday I was at Bioparco here there are the news. Arrivals:0.1.0 Grevy'zebra(she's actually separated from the male.) 0.0.3 red ruffled lemurs(they arrived from Bristol and are being introduced to the black lemurs.) some pied avocets(they are in Biodiversitalia) Births:1.0.0 addax. Construction update:the zoo is building the new exibits for orangutans(near the chimpanzees),the titi house(in the site of the aviary which kept the two hidden macaques),the exibit for meerkats(behind the reptile house);and refurbishing the mangabey and pygmy hippo enclosure(about pygmy hippos they are planting some plants). New enclosures:A new aviary for European owls was opened behind Biodiversitalia.
Yesterday I went to bioparco, the exibits for mangabeys and titis are almost finished and myght open in September, while the exibit for the orangutangs might open in november. It has been confirmed that some wolves will arrive in future. Birhts: 1,1 Black lemurs 1,0 Armadillo 0,0,1 girgentana goat some Purple Swamphens a keeper told me that another white napped mangabey was born. Arrivals: 0,2 grevy zebras 1,1 Salmon-crested Cockatoos 0,0,3 meerkats some walldrapp Depatures: 1,0 giraffe 0,1 bear Deaths: 1,0 White napped mangabey ( a solitary male, due to old age) 1,1 Grivet(due to old age)
