The binturong is already on exibit at Bioparco but at the moment spends more time in the indoor quarters. The male sea lion is temporary in one of the two Grey seals' pool, he'll soon be transferred in the new pool and, once there, two females will join him.
The new rhino exhibit is still under construction, but the works are going quite well, even if there is a foreseeable delay.
In the last months there have been the following births: -twin cotton-top tamarins -a ring-tailed lemur -a tapir -two flamingo eggs have hatched and there are more on the way -at least four Nile lewches
Just visited Bioparcoroma (visited last year) and the continuing improvements are making a real difference to the whole zoo experience i. e animal welfare, education etc
The Bioparco maybe is going to close in the near future for financial problems. We've to wait the end of May to know if it'll happen or not
Just rumors or are there any further details to find on the internet on that? What happened? They are building a new rhino enclosure, the young rhinos scheduled for Rome are waiting for departure ...
All the articles about it are in Italian. Basically Rome's city council has to give the zoo 3 million euros (as far as I've understood the zoo is run by a foundation but the city council has to give the zoo a certain ammount of money every year). One millions of euros was due for last year, while the other two were due for this year (apparently last year's annual report has not been approved for these reasons). Furthermore since mid April the wheather has been particularly rainy and cold for an Roman spring and this resulted in low affluence, thus low income, during the Easter holidays, Labour Day and the weekends. Last week Francesco Petretti, the zoo director, has sent a protest letter to the city council. In this letter he assessed the current problems and stated that, should this situation continue, the zoo could face closure. The city council has then stated that by the end of May the payments should take place and everithing sould be back to normal. Let's see what will happen. By the way you know who are the rhinos scheduled to Rome?
Well, one young white rhino boy is "Kibo" from Augsburg. As soon as I get confirmation from the other zoo, I'll will post the 2nd name.
