It's been a little over a month since Jurong Bird Park shut its gates to the public. Work to relocate the birds to their new home is gathering pace. Several hundred birds have already been relocated to the new Bird Paradise, including breeding pairs of dozens of selected species (housed in the new park's back of house breeding centre), all the birds from the High Flyers Show, the Birds of Paradise, and the reduced Pelican flock (Australian, Dalmatian, Eastern White and Spot-billed) from Pelican Cove. Relocation of the birds in the African Treetops aviary is currently ongoing.

For those interested, Google maps has a relatively recent satellite image of the new Bird Paradise site. The aviaries and various structures are clearly visible:

Even as the birds in Jurong are being relocated to the new park, new bird imports are also arriving regularly; not an easy task for the staff, having to care for birds across 2 sites. Some of the recent arrivals include:

    Palawan Peacock Pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis)
    Western Plantain-eater (Crinifer piscator)
Piping Hornbill (Bycanistes fistulator) - Mandai's hornbill collection now stands at 23 species
Western Long-tailed Hornbill (Horizocerus albocristatus) - new females to join existing males
    European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
    Speckled Mousebird (Colius striatus)
    Black-winged Lovebird (Agapornis taranta)
    Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi)

Good idea. They correlate nicely with the plan/map as well: Bird Paradise to open in Mandai in Q2 of 2023 and will have eight walk-in aviaries

No significant species comes to mind. Even the Shoebills have already been relocated to Mandai. Some natural attrition has taken place though, I understand some single-specimen species have passed on, such as Spangled Cotinga, Orange-fronted Fruit Dove and Palm Nut Vulture.

A new public park called Mandai Wildlife West that serves Bird Paradise and the upcoming Rainforest Wild Asia will also open on 8 May:

There have been a few additional media preview videos released including this detailed 44-minute tour of Bird Paradise along with the entry plaza with all the playgrounds etc. It’s not the best quality but shows a good perspective from a visitor’s angle of some of the aviaries – the pathways, the feel, the layout and especially the size of the exhibits. Around seven minutes in is when the tour from Bird Paradise’s entrance begins. The tour starts at the penguin exhibit (which haven’t arrived yet apparently) with the first part comprising of the underwater viewing area and then visitors will travel up the ramp to the main viewing area. Happy to be corrected as it was quick but it seems that Magellanic Steamer Ducks [13:31] are also signed with the penguins as well.

The penguins lead straight into the Australian aviary – Emus, Magpie Geese, Cape Barren Geese, Eclectus Parrots etc. There is also a sign for wallabies [15:40] he breezes past with the emus. The Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos are really the featured well and have been by several media sources. There is an air-conditioned space between Australia and the Papua aviary [17:48] with the crowned pigeons, cockatoos including White Cockatoos, Blue-eyed Cockatoos and later on, cassowary. After Papua, is the Lory Loft [21:22] for the assortment of lories, lorikeets, crowned pigeons etc. After a detour to the playspaces there is return to the Wings of Asia aviary [29:01] and a few loops till he reaches the very open Crimson Wetlands [36:00] which also shows there are some chelonian species [37:00] signed near the flamingos. It finishes with a quick breeze through Amazonian Jewels [40:56] with a good view of the piping-guan at 42:38

Bird Paradise has hosted a number of previews over the past week, for staff, educators, members and media. I will be posting some photos in the gallery and the species list for each exhibit (in separate posts as they are quite lengthy) based on signage in the aviaries and personal observations. Those species with asterisks* are, to the best of my knowledge, not presently in Mandai Wildlife Group's collection and are awaiting arrival. The Winged Sanctuary section has yet to be completed, so no species list for that yet (it will supposedly have about 100 species).

    I'll start with Penguin Cove:
    King Penguin
    Gentoo Penguin
    Northern Rockhopper Penguin
    Humboldt Penguin
    Magellanic Steamerduck*
    Silver Gull

This is going to be amazing. As ever, very grateful for the work you put into these lists.

Do you know the expected opening date for Winged Sanctuary?
