http://www.iucn.org/en/news/archive/2006/07/7_pr_rhino.htm West african black rhinos are no more, this is a sad day.
Is this the rhinos in the wild , or does this include any in zoos also ? In any case , I do agree . It is a sad day .
Yes very sad news, as far as I know Nigel there were no West African Black Rhino in zoos, it makes it all the more important to save the ones which are left, Shame more zoos in oz are not holding more Black Rhinos, we do need to hold bigger numbers of endangered species than we do now.
i cant seem to find any information about the distinctiveness of the western black rhinos from any other black rhino populations. anyone got any info on this?
Info on West African blacks Patrick, Try the website of the International Rhino Foundation irf-rhinos.org. Or IUCN's rhino specialist group. IRF surely has info distinguishing the 4 or 5 subspecies (some also recognise the northern form from Ethiopia-Sudan as a distinct race). However, you will not find much more info than here, I am afraid. Jelle
