I would like to try and make a family tree of Chester's Black Rhinos. I would like to assign people to a specific Rhino from the list below:
    Malindi (Female)
    Sammi (Male)
    Manyara (Female)
    Quinto (Male)
    Rosie (Female)
    Ema (Female)
    Magadi (Male)

I will attempt to find out the family of Kitani (Female).

Zoochat member Kifaru Bwana seems to be quite knowledgeable about Rhinos in Europe, so he might be able to help you

    Kitani

Here is what I have gathered so far

Bwana x Mama Kidogo = Rosie
Mama Kidogo x Rupert = Parky
    Parky x Esther = Emma
    Esther x Quinto = Manyara
    Quinto x Pangani = Kitani
    Kitani x Sammi = Asani

This is not the same 'Emma' that has just had a calf. You have listed the first 'Emma' who was born at Chester. The current one came from Europe.

I have already found this out. Ema (who's just had a calf) came from Dvur Kralove in 2005 along with a male named Jeremy, who then moved on to Doue La Fontaine along with KataKata who had come from Whipsnade, and before that, Port Lympne. Emma, the daughter of Esther and Parky, was born in 1991 but died in 2003.

So after the information I found out earlier, I now need to find the relatives of Bwana, Mama Kidogo, Rupert, Esther, Pangani, Quinto and Sammi.

I know that Quinto was born in Zurich, Esther was born in London, and Sammi in Japan (Apparently).

I have the same advice for you, try to obtain the studbook or wait for Kifaru Bwana.

From my notes, I can help you only with the family tree of Ema (with one m), but I´m not 100% sure about some details.

f Ema CB 2002 Dvur Kralove - Jimm x Elba
m Jimm CB 1979 Dvur Kralove - Isis x Jimmi
m Isis CB 1977 Cincinnati - Embu (WB Kenya) x Princess
f Princess CB 1970 Cincinatti - Johnny (WV Kenya) x Opal (WB Kenya)
f Elba CB 1996 CB Dvur Kralove - Cody x Eimy
m Cody CB 1975 ?Mosman?/Australia - Ferdinand (WB Tanzania) x Beauty or Peggy ?? (WB Tanzania)
f Eimy CB 1990 Dvur Kralove - Isis x Elvíra
f Elvíra CB 1977 Dvur Kralove - Ken (WB Kenya) x Elsa (WB Kenya)

    I can tell you the following;

Bwana & Mama Kidogo were wildcaught and imported to Whipsnade. Their only surviving offspring ( out of five or six together) are Rosie(at Chester) and KataKata(at Doue la Fontaine)

Rupert was born at Hanover Zoo. he went first to Bristol, then to Whipsnade. His only offspring was 'Parky' (rupert x mama Kidogo)

Esther's parents were 'Paul' & 'June' wildcaught and imported to London Zoo. They also had several calves but Esther was the only one that reached maturity.

Pangani may have come from Zurich too- and she may have been related to Quinto(half-siblings?)

Pangani came from Zurich. Sammy came from Osaka and has a sister called Sally.

For anybody interested in zoo rhinos, the book “The Rhinoceros in Captivity” (L. C. Rookmaaker, 1998) is thoroughly recommended. This book lists details of 2,439 rhinoceroses kept from Roman times to 1994.

With help from this book, I can fill in some gaps:-

Quinto was born Zurich on 21 Sept. 1990 (parents Kifaru & Sabi); arrived Chester 13 November 1992.

Pagani was born Zurich on 7 March 1989 (parents Kifaru & Mtoto); arrived Chester 13 November 1992.

Esther was born in London on 22 May 1982 (parents Bwana Mkubwa & June); arrived Chester 9 May 1984

Rupert (also known as Caspar) was born Hannover (parents Conni & Susi); went from Hannover to Bristol, then London, then Whipsnade

    Hope this is helpful.

Again, with reference to “The Rhinoceros in Captivity” (L. C. Rookmaaker, 1998):-

Conni (Hannover) and Susi (Hannover ) were both wild caught.

Mtoto (born Zurich 27 August 1970); parents Billy and Susi (both wild caught).

Sabi (arrived Zurich 23 April 1983, from Dvur Kralove); wild caught.

There were two black rhinos at Zurich, both called Kifaru.

One was born Zurich; 21 October 1984; parents Murray and Mtoto. (NB Murray was wild caught and had previously been at both Wroclaw and Dvur Kralove before coming to Zurich.)

The other specimen was born at St. Louis Zoo (4 December 1976; parents Boyle & Olive; both wild caught). This was the father of Pagani and Quinto.

I agree with some of the earlier posts; you really need to get a copy of the studbook........
