there is a rumor that blackpool is adding white rhino back in to the collection in 2012, anyone know how true this is?
yes that was back in 2009 i think???? i know they did have white rhino a number of years ago and i spoke to a member of staff a few days ago a he hinted they would make a return somtime in 2012
I haven't heard anything yet, however as KB has said a few years ago there was a rumour Indian rhino were being brought into the collection, I'll ask when I'm there on Sunday.
Giant anteaters will be arriving and going into the old vicuna paddock opposite the small primate house. the site is currently under development at the moment.
Can I ask were you got this information from? Thanks for confirming that there arriving, when are they are arriving?
I got the information from the keepers , the giant anteaters will be mixed withe the vicuna, capybara and mara. Another new species is a possibility for this year as well.
Thank you. It'll be interesting to see if there coming from the UK or from somewhere else, if they did come from the UK then I know a few anteaters which could/need to be moved on. I think I know which new species you maybe on about, it's going to be an interesting year at Blackpool I'll be there on Sunday having a look round.
I think one has been sourced and maybe one may come from Madrid. Will be great to have this species at the zoo.
Update from my visit today: As has been mentioned giant anteaters are arriving this year, the enclosure is being modified, with new sheltering and the slightly off-show area being modified. I now know which species maybe arriving as well as anteaters in 2012, I can't say just yet but it's going to be a very nice species for the zoo. Ivy the pileated gibbon nearly died from her illness but she's beginning to get better in the vet clinic. Crested geckos now back on-show. Hopefully there should be more Magelliac penguin chicks in 2012. Vicugna, Capybara and Cranes have been moved to the former gazelle enclosure. (There's only two female Arabian gazelles left) I only saw one king colobus youngster, but there are twins. Chinese soft shell turtle has been moved to the old American bullfrog vivarium. The pair of Standing's day geckos have been separated and are now in the Jamaican boa and one of the skink enclosures. To finish of the news, I got licked to death off Arnie the aardvark.
BBC News - Blackpool Zoo uses glitter to identify gorilla poo Attempts are being made to get Gorilla, Njema pregnant...
I thought that Njema had been on contraception, but this implies that she hasn't, unless they just omitted to mention that here...
The rhinos wont be here this year, I don't know about next year but sometime in the future is what I was told. The main thing this year is the elephant indoor accommodation, giant anteaters and one more thing which I can't reveal just yet.
Mia and Perry a pair of Shetland ponies are arriving for Easter. Badger and Candy another pair will be at the zoo for the summer.
