It would be nice if you could specify which zoos when signalling almost every Jawan zoo. I think with regard to f.i. anoa the tally for Jawa is: Lowland anoa 1. Ragunan - Jakarta 2. Surabaya 3. Taman Safari - Bogor 4. Taman Safari - Prigen/Pasaruan (???) Bali 5. Bali Safari and Marine Park - Gianyar Sulawesi 6. K.B. Sitra Satwa - Sokkolia, Gowa (Bontomarannu Education Park) 7. Makassar 8. Manado, Forestry Station Mountain anoa 1. K.B. Sitra Satwa - Sokkolia, Gowa (Bontomarannu Education Park) 2. Manado, Forestry Station I personally have not heard of any other zoos on Jawa exhibiting anoa apart from Ragunan, TSI and Surabaya. But things could have changed ...? On Sulawesi the anoa are found in other facilities as well, I just do not have the list on me right now. I will get to banteng in a minute as well!
Banteng (the ones I know of ...) Jawa 1. Ragunan Zoo, Jakarta 2. Taman Safari I, Bogor 3. Taman Safari II, Pasaruan 4. Baluran National Park, Forestry Station 5. Surabaya Zoo (checked see video footage) Bali 5. Bali Safari and Marine Park, Gianyar. Link: Perhaps more zoos in Jawa have banteng, but I have yet to find these. BTW: Just noted that Batu Secret Zoo also should have anoa and babirusa on exhibit. Link: Maps – Batu Secret Zoo
Yes, on the map their are at the top end of the trail next to the anoa exhibit. It would be nice to know how many anoa as well as babirusa they actually hold right now! Does either of you @Nandito @Fargusno know at all?
@Nandito, you are sure. That is an enormous number! Where did they acquire their babirusas from? From the wild in Sulawesi (is there still frequent trade?) or one of the other zoos already holding babirusas. The latter I cannot think is right as for sure Ragunan had only 4 individuals on display when I visited in 2017/18! Also, Surabaya Zoo really does not hold that many babirusas it self (BTW: most if not all are as yet founder animals waiting to reproduce). I remember that a recent item from ASP showed a first breeding in Surabaya of babirusas for a long time. BTW: PKBSI is promoting Indonesian zoos to invest more in native fauna and ex situ conservation breeding with the focus on banteng, anoa, babirusa and Sumatran tiger. I assume more species will follow suit very soon.
They acquired most of their Indonesian endemic animals from the wild, so I guess their babirusas came from a place somewhere in Sulawesi.
I would like to know for sure! It would be great news for the the international Asian Species Program and the PKSBI endeavour to get more zoos in Indonesia to up their trade and standard conditions, capacity building in maintaining species through improved husbandry, exhibits and ex situ conservation breeding. I must check how many founder animals f.i. exist for babirusa but that would be in the low 10's and 20 at the most! So many wonderful and yet rare threatened species in R.M. Indonesia!
If you go after CoVid (or in the meantime if you can write to them about the babirusa and anoa or anything else to do with the Batu Secret Zoo), I would very much appreciate if you check up and talk to keepers or curator about it!
