I hope this means new episodes, but they have been re-running about 30 episodes very regularly, several a week, for many months, so they could just as easily be cheering on the show in reruns. It's all great TV and animal fun for most viewers, so advertising the show is great, no matter what they're showing. It's only people like us that are anxiously awaiting the latest stories lol
I hope so as well. You'd think with the entire WCS and four other collections behind Bronx there would be plenty to air on the show. The aquarium in particular would make for a great story. I think you could be onto something, though, which how expensive it must be to film such a show in New York. I can't imagine filming in San Diego will be much cheaper, though. ~Thylo
It's easy to find cheap hotels a short drive away in SD, their parking is free, and they're open longer than the ridiculous 10-5 of WCS zoos. Besides, the little zoos and Bronx can't really even compete with the 500 square new-and-spitshined acres Columbus has, not to mention Jack Hanna and the thousands of acres and 20-odd species at The Wilds. Lol. I've done the drive several times, and I bet it takes less time to go from SD to the SP than it does to get from the Bronx to the Aquarium! Those two plus their safari components are very pretty and manicured and look great on TV. And the luxe of the Georgia Aquarium! The conditions at the Bronx, by comparison, look like what you might expect in the "Boogie Down Bronx," rough around the edges. They fortunately haven't shown anything that's too ancient or looks too small (except the night yards on Asia), but it really doesn't say a lot about the Zoo's facilities that keepers are creeping down the exterior stairs of an abandoned building to use its basement to find a quiet space to breed a highly endangered species. This was past the summer season or Clyde would have rendered at least half of the zoo un-quiet. Lol. They've shown meetings of the staff, of all five zoo directors, of just Jim Breheny in his office, and Clyde's bark pierces the air through them all.
It has been mentioned at the Bronx Zoo that they have been filming for Season 4. The new dholes will be in one of the featured episodes. The Zoo Bronx series has been running in the winter since it's inception. I think the first season ran before the Christmas Season, but Season 3 ran from January-March. Since The Zoo San Diego and The Aquarium are now in rotation it gives Animal Planet an almost constant rotation of new series of this type. And as ratings go, Season 3 of the Zoo was the #2 show on Animal Planet, so as long as it does well it will likely continue.
What does opening hours have to do with a film crew's ability to shoot they show? Also, the Bronx is the easiest of NYC's five burrows to reach from outside the city and, I think, is the only one which doesn't require a toll payment, so finding cheaper accommodation outside the city would also be an option. Is still don't understand your issue with the Asia hoofstock yards. You can see them from the monorail if you know where to look and most are larger than most of the on-show hoofstock yards at SDZ. Additionally, they're not using "abandoned buildings" for anything? The Monkey House is closed to the public, as are several other older buildings that house animals, but this does not mean it is abandoned. The Monkey House has never been abandoned and has still always held animals since its closure. ~Thylo
There's no toll if you're coming from the north (White Plains / CT). There are tolls if you're coming from any other direction, especially NJ.
I still don't see a reason why a film crew couldn't stay outside of the city to the north and come in that way, though. ~Thylo
How is it more hassle to do that for Bronx than it is to do the same thing for San Diego, especially when it's a roughly 45min-1hr drive between the two SD parks on one of the most congested highways in the world? ~Thylo
Was at the zoo today, planning to return on friday to see the bits that I missed. Was sad to see the blue penguin enclosure under renovation, are they perhaps on view elsewhere?
Why would they be there? Especially since the children’s zoo is closed for the season... Anyways, also visited today. No, they’re not elsewhere in the zoos. The dholes are easy to see after 2:00.
Was there yesterday, and the little blues must be off-show. It was raining all day, which kept some of the outdoor exhibits that are open in the winter without animals. However, two of the brown bears, Yuri the Amur tiger, and the herd of Pere David's deer were out. The sea lions were out and swimming, lol with Clyde's head emerging from the water to breathe, open-mouthed and barking. Holiday Lights is great. Interesting tidbit I learned in the birdhouse. Those specialized supplemental "chows" fed to nearly every species are apparently so expensive that, for birds at least, they use dog food and tinker with it to meet nutritional needs.
