Is that not his 3rd sired young there and since he is on a 10 year loan I forget how long he has been there since
Wonder of after he is done being on the 10 year loan if lincoln park zoo is going to take him back and restart another family troop and send on of the bachelor's from the bacheor troop to brookfield or if they are just going to keep Jojo till he hits the retirement stage
He will most likely stay at BZ for the rest of his life, unless if SSP ends up recommending something different.
A baby gorilla has been born!: Brookfield Zoo welcomes new baby gorilla Brookfield Zoo introduces newborn baby gorilla Chicago Zoological Society - Brookfield Zoo Welcomes Newborn Gorilla to the Family
I almost overlooked this to focus on the baby gorilla but wow, this story is fascinating and could have far-reaching effects on zoos. A scientific and non-invasive way to measure animal welfare would really simplify arguments on if animals are actually 'happy' and if captivity is humane, and make it easier to examine positive and negative effects.
The zoo's youngest dolphin, Maxine, has passed away. She will be greatly missed. Maxine was very special to me, one reason being I was the first Backstage Adventure participant to ever get to touch her. Young Brookfield Zoo dolphin dies unexpectedly
Two amur leopard cubs were born in April. 2 leopard cubs, endangered in wild, born at Brookfield Zoo 2 healthy Amur leopard cubs born at Brookfield Zoo
I'm definitely excited about this news, but I'm generally skeptical of zoos' motivations when they wait this long to publicize news like this and wish they would instead do so immediately.
I am excited and agree with this policy line though. Esp. with carnivores and first few litters it is better to have them see thru the first few critical months! I have seen and heard too many cases where they even before a birth announced and set up cameras only for the cubs never to appear, stillbirths, birth complications or even the female not making it in a difficult birth. So, I can really see why ...! For what it is worth: Is it just me ..., or is it that in the last year or so quite a few new births have been announced for Amur leopard in the US / AZA SSP camp (and even transfers overseas to set up new breeding pairs in the US)?
It's nothing new with Brookfield. They rarely will announce births (and even new zoo residents) right away.
It has been a good year so far for Amir Leopard births. A pair in Vienna born March 27th, two females born at San Diego Zoo April 5th, Two males born at Brookfield Zoo April 18th and a female born at Hogle Zoo May 9th. Those are all I am aware of but there may be others.
That’s what I thought but when I went back to recheck that I couldn’t find the support for it. Thanks for letting me know.
