People had been talking about how the species list has taken some hits in recent years, but it seems to be with some of the larger ABC species. The zoo has tons of smaller hidden gem species in it's collection. Plus, most of the ABC species that have left are slated to return at some point in the future. From the way it sounds that zoo is changing, I am excited to see where they decide to go with the collection and what new ways that they will come up with to display these species in the coming years.

Also, I know they aren't on display yet, for some reason, but I thought during the pandemic when they were showing the zoo at home segments, there was an amphibian species...Togo Slippery Frogs, I believe, that they said would hopefully be on display soon. It's been a couple years now and I don't recall them having an exhibit anywhere yet. Does anyone know if they are still being kept at the zoo, or if their plans took a turn and the species didn't take well to being displayed or captivity?

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the non-ABC collection still is after not visiting for four years. The megafauna have definitely taken a hit, but new complexes in development should hopefully provide more interesting and engaging exhibits for the ones still around.

I'm curious about the Togo Slippery Frogs as well. AFAIK Omaha had(Still has?) them on display from ones sent over from Brookfield, but they were never displayed here. It's interesting that the original facility to receive and breed them didn't put them on display but another one they sent the frogs out to did. Definitely a species I'd like to see put on display, I'd imagine there are plenty of suitable enclosures across the zoo.

The frogs are definitely still there, quite a lot of them in fact. I'm not sure what happened on plans to display them, but at one point there was talk of putting them on exhibit in Feathers and Scales with a lizard species from the same region. It's been a while since I've heard anything regarding that development.

Only having visit Lincoln Park and Brookfield last year, I'm inclined to agree that Lincoln Park is way too small an institution to house elephants comfortably.

I was looking at the Lincoln Park Zoo map, and I thought that maybe they could convert the "Camels & Zebras" area and make it instead an elephant yard, possibly even make it a mixed-species yard of elephants and their Grévy's zebras but I have a feeling that that space would be too small. Lincoln Park is only 14 acres, the same size as Sacramento Zoo.

I would love to visit Brookfield Zoo again whenever they bring back elephants. But I'll probably go back before that to re-visit their birds.

I agree that elephants at Lincoln Park is non-starter regardless, but I just want to note that the zoo is 14 hectares, not acres. That means it's actually roughly 35 acres in size.
It less about whenever they bring back elephants, more so if ever they bring back elephants. The new director has expressed interest, but constructing a large enough exhibit and actually obtaining individuals from a limited population would be a huge undertaking that the zoo may not see as a smart investment. I'd say we won't know for sure what the zoos future plans with elephants are until early next year, if there are any at all.

I checked and the whole Camel and Zebra area is about 12,187.5 m² or about 3 acres. So theoretically, you could fit in a small bachelor herd of elephants. Emphasis on theoretically though.

You'd have to factor in an indoor facility for the elephants, service roads, new pathways, a filtration system for the pool... which would theoretically only alot the elephants 1.5 acres of outdoor space. Counting indoor space, 2 acres, as a liberal estimate. You'd also be sacrificing a bunch of other animals for the elephants, and as much as I love elephants, ultimately it's not worth it.

Oh I get that. I was just playing along. I also think that you're better off having them at Brookfield and doing something else with the camel/zebra area. Perhaps a Asia section to bring back tigers.
