Female polar bear Tania, 21, was transferred from Vienna to Budapest yesterday. I hope she is doing well. She is such a cutie! Because she didn't get pregnant she was transferred from Rotterdam to Vienna and replaced by Olinka a year ago. But Tania couldn't stay any longer at Vienna, because they started construction work on the polar bear enclosure ...

Could someone take photos of the polar bear enclosure at Budapest and of Tania, please.

I seem to remember last time I was at Budapest, they were doing some work on the polar bear enclosure so I hope Tania has a nice new home, I couldn't see what it was like as it was fenced off at the time, but this was a few years ago now.

0:2 Dhole have been sent to Minnesota, USA
    Using Google translate....

Yesterday, the U.S. set sail toward the Minnesota Zoo and Piri Fanni, the two female Asian wild dog. The two animals, of course, do not walk him to cut thousands of kilometers of travel: by air, make it a great way for a proper shipping container, which on Wednesday morning, the nurses and veterinarians have been using. The red wolf and dhole also known as zoo breeding endangered species in the two new female bloodline Budapest to enter the North American breeding program.

The Asian wild dog (Cuon alpinus), also known as red wolves, and even dhole is also prevalent. The latter is one of the languages spoken in India, comes from the Kannada vocabulary, but not entirely accurate. The Kannada language is the word tola wolf usually does, this species szilu Naji, and Naji tub known as the first line. The species was known in Europe Rudyard Kipling's writings, but the red wolf is not only in India but also in other parts of Asia, especially in Central, East, South East and South Asia occur in many habitats. What is more interesting as we can say that the species from fossil remains found in Europe, and Björn Kurtán that even in ancient times have lived in Hungary that red wolves.

The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden since 2008, held this race, and of course the years have also proliferated. Two animals are born, named Fanny and Piri just traveled Wednesday to the United States, and more specifically into the Minnesota Zoo. A great way is to take the two animals because it is absolutely important for the Asian wild dog zoo breeding programs. This species is endangered, so the major zoos, dhole, which are held, are all involved in this breeding program. The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) was set up in 2006 and launched the Asian regional wild dog breeding program (EEP) and a similar breeding program with the North American Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) as well. Sometimes it is necessary that the European and North American breeding programs is also happen gene flow, blood lines, Replacing, and since we were two females is very valuable in this respect, therefore, the preliminary consultations after Europe came from another zoo, but the Minnesota will contribute to saving this species is thinning. Yes sounding so we can say that the Reds have gone to America, which is more exciting as Fanny and Piri's father was originally from the Moscow Zoo in Budapest.

The Minnesota Zoo was founded in 1978, moreover, is one of the founders of the zoo industry legend, Ulysses S. Seal was, who died eight years ago at the time of our report on our site.

    Wombats arrived to Budapest!

1.1 Common Wombats (Tasmanian subspecies, Vombatus ursinus tasmaniensis) arrived to Budapest Zoo from ZooDoo Wildlife Park (Richmond, Tasmania). The female, Molly was born in January 2008, the male, Wally is two months younger. They have had an offsping in Tasmania earlier this year.

This is not the first occasion that the Budapest Zoo exhibits Wombats during its long history. The first animal arrived in 1897, after that a new specimen had been transferred in 1911, also from Tasmania. Moreover, an other species, a Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) lived in the Hungarian capital between the 22nd of August 1956 and 3rd of January 1973.

Captive breeding of Wombats in Europe is not an easy matter. Since 1910 only three institution has been successfully bred Wombats: Halle in 1914, Whipsnade in 1931 and Hannover in the last decades.

Hopefully the animals at Budapest will be proven a good breeding pair…

In January 2010 Budapest Zoo opened a new Australian House (for details see my post earlier in this thread, 32). You can see the Wombats in a separate house and enclosure just right next to this Australian Pavilion.

The animals are on public display now!

Article about a Nile bat at Budapest Zoo :
Nile Bat Buddies Hang Out at Budapest Zoo

    Bat 1

The Budapest Zoo has had this species of Nile Bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) for over twenty years. These fruit-eating bats form large colonies in which there is regular breeding. They mate generally from June to September, and after a four month gestation, one bat is born -or a rare set of twins - around October to December. It takes just a few months to wean them. As a result of the zoo'slarge colony, there are babies and sometimes a pup or two may need special assistance from the staff. Just recently two baby bats were in need of extra care. They were nursed through the stage of learning to eat solid food successfully and have now been happily feeding on the fruits offered and "hangin'" out together!

Unlike most fruit bats, Egyptian bats use echolocation: when flying in darkness they utter high-pitched buzzing and listen to its echo off of nearby objects. They use this echo to located and identify objects.

Also known as the Egyptian Bat, The Nile is one of the most well-known of fruit-eating bats. They are found in the wild not only along the Nile but in many parts of Africa, Asia Minor and the Middle East. Males are larger than females. They grow up to 7 inches in adulthood, weighing up to 6 ounces. An interesting fact: the Nile Bat is mentioned in the oldest written records - heiroglyphics - and again were described by French scholar, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) in the wake of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.
