The adult female kodkod or guiña that was rescued in january from the great fires and rehabilated at Buin zoo has now been released. You have seen her in the videos in this gallery and been moved by this feline amazing recovery under the care of some of the best vet care in latin America. This is the good work that zoos do. Of course, the international press will completely ignore this.

This Chilean Zoo - alike the Zoologico Nacional in Santiago - deserves more attention and prominence on Zoochat. I decided I would assemble some zoo news items from 2017-2020 era for everyone's enjoyment and perusal.

Since, we already have had a lengthy discussion on pygmy hippos with relevance to Latino America let me start with a new arrival from Buenos Aires Zoo and a recent birth!

December 2018 - arrival of F Frida from Buenos Aires - Ecoparque in Argentina.

Please note in the very same broadcast from December 2018 Buin Zoo received a pair of Gila monster and 2 turtles ex Ecoparque in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

February 2019 - new habitat for pygmy hippo inaugurated.

End 2019 - birth F Bernardina by breeding pair Hippolito x Coca, their 4th offspring till date.

Buin Zoo have received their first ever Red Pandas! The pair (Popo and Ichiha) arrived back in March from Nifrel, Japan but they were only publicly announced yesterday. The pair are currently six years old and the zoo hope to breed the species in the future.

    Great news :)
The only zoo in South America with Somali wild ass? I'm getting more and more interested in this zoo.

Very good news, Buin zoo did not have Somali ass , when I visited in 2017. The zoos of Chile are becoming more important among Latin American animal collections.

According to a recent video they uploaded, the trio of Somali Wild Ass were all imported from France; the two females arrived in May 2017 and the male was received two years later. The recent foals have both been confirmed as females so the group comprises of five (1.4) individuals currently. Their group is managed under an EEP for this particular species.

I've been watching many videos of the park during the lockdown, and as far as I know the males actually came from the Cezch republic.

Yes the male Somali Wild Ass originates from the Czech Republic but he came from a French zoo according to the CITES Trade Database:

Good to know. Now we have to add those to the gibbon population in Latin America (if they haven't been added already).

I wonder if a ex situ captive program would be worthwhile.
