The white-handed gibbons, all female, came from the Santiago Zoo. They are apparently striking a deal with an European zoo to get a male and form a breeding group.

Very nice video. I saw the older female gibbon as a juvenile in Santiago zoo. The enclosure they have at Buin zoo is much larger than the one they lived in at Zoológico Nacional. Good to see the cooperation of the two zoos.

Yeah I also remember seeing the juvenile gibbon the last time I went to the national zoo, a gorgeous sight.

Of course the Buin Zoo exhibit is much larger and more spacious mostly because it was designed for the orangutan, Sandai. They tried to bring in the siamangs for a while, but they turned out to not be compatible. The current exhibit has Sandai, the white-handed gibbons, mute swan and white peafowl.

New things mentioned in the last video uploaded to the youtube channel:
-The park has received a pair of caracals coming from South Africa.
-Alongside the caracals, the park has also received servals.
-The porcupines in the nocturnal house are now living in the African area near the lemurs.

Buin Zoo has held caracals before, I saw one in one of my earliest visits on 2008 and the species was also present as late as 2020. Maybe that individual died since.

And I'm so excited about the servals!

Because the commune of Buin has regressed to full quarantine, Buin Zoo will remain closed until further updates :(

Two Toco Toucans have hatched at Buin Zoo. The pair are currently two months old:

The Butterfly House has been reopened after having closed early during the pandemic. The Servals and Caracals are now on display. The zoo also got new Black and white ruffed lemurs. The Snow leopard has been announced as back on display after being off-exhibit for a time.

Buin Zoo is collecting firms in support of keeping the zoo open; as the Constitutional Convention may vote a norm prohibiting the public display of wildlife (which would lead to the closure or reconversion of zoos).

Animal rights activists in social media have supported the norm citing ZooXXI....this is not looking good. Hopefully the zoo avoids a situation like the one at Barcelona...

A few general updates from the past six months for the ever-developing Buin Zoo:
    • a Black Spiny-tailed Iguana was found on a boat from Mexico and was taken in by the zoo where it is currently being looked after.
    • births/hatchings have included Giraffe, Eastern Black-and-white Colobus, Southern Pudu and four Humboldt Penguins. The colobus infant is particularly noteworthy as it had been many years since they had bred them and were down to a trio. The infant is being raised by the second female rather than the birth mother. Regarding pudu, the zoo had 11 individuals as of September 2022.
    • one of their male Southern White Rhinos, Pantaleon, has been transferred safely to Bioparque Ukumarí, Colombia and he now lives with two females for breeding purposes in the park's expansive African zone. He was the first rhino to have been born in South America back in 2017 after his parents were imported from South Africa in 2013. Quite an epic move from Chile to Colombia.
