Today I noticed that there are now two porcupine fishes exhibited together with the epaulet shark and the lionfish
The Rhino calf that was born recently is now on show in the Savannah. A 3 year old male left for Rome. In the bird house there have been some changes. The Red-winged parrot is now in with the Galahs and Kookaburra. The Satyr tragopan and Argus pheasant have changed enclosures as well. The Wrinkled hornbill are still off-show, but can be seen from a distance. The Greater flamingo seem to have raised 7 chicks this year. The Malayan sun bear cubs are very playful and have access to the outdoor enclosure part of the day. The rest of the time they are in the on-show indoor enclosure
The sex of the first 2 Sun bear cubs has been confirmed by the zoo: both are male, which is great news for the European zoo population.
Because of the birth of a Hog deer, the complete group is now placed of-show. As soon as the young is a little bigger the group will be again visiable in the Rimba-enclosure : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=2418230155083972
Some updates from social media and a visit last weekend: - The introduction of the new Asian elephant cow seems to be going quite well, after some troubles in the first month, the paddock was not split in two anymore yesterday. The 2 cows did not interact, but went their own way when I was there. - On FB the zoo shared a video of tiny Fiddler crab larvae, so it seems they are breeding them behind the scenes. - On youtube they mentioned a new West-African chimpanzee male is expected to arrive to breed. The zoo currently keeps 1.5 West-African chimpanzee together with 8 hybrids, the latter are all on contraception. - In the Rimba a Pig-tailed macaque was born. - The signage for White-eyes has been removed in the Bush, so they are currently down to 33 bird species in the Bush. This means that in total Burgers' Zoo keeps about 75 bird species (71 species on show, but over 25% of these species is kept in 10 zoos or less in Europe, 4 of those species are the only ones on show in Europe. So very much quality over quantity). - The manatee calf is growing rapidly now and has been confirmed a male. The 2 Malayan sun bear cubs are also very active, they have started to climb and yesterday were destroying some dead trees at a height of 8-10 meters.
I heard that the wrinkled hornbill is back in the Bush. Which would be a very nice sight of them flying around. Can someone confirm this?
Yes I can. 3 males have been released yesterday afternoon. I can also confirm that it is indeed a very nice sight to see!
They have kept them for the first 10 years in the Bush as well and also for a short spell around 2007. In the first years they kept a couple, which went well until young were born and a protein rich diet was required, consisting of the other inhabitants...
@lintworm You mention how 4 birds are BTS in burgers, do you know which ones? (The only ones I know are the chickens but you probably excluded those from your total amount of bird species.)
Patagonian rock parakeet, Fulvous whistling duck, Red-shouldered teal (?) and until a few days ago the Wrinkled hornbills.
The last patagonian rock parakeets moved out a few weeks ago. Surprised to hear the news of the hornbills. Curious on why they decided to move them back to the bush. Too many anoles? Or is it part of a bigger revamp of the bush?
Ahh yea the ducks, could have known that. And I thought that the hornbills were in the fazanterie before they moved to the bush?
