Losing a silverback always creates big problems for Zoo gorilla groups. I've known at least one female that pined for her male partner and was stressed so that she could no longer feed her baby(it died). In most situations like this one female eventually adopts the lead role but there is squabbling and stress involved as it is not a natural situation longterm. Where babies are involved they aren't safe from a new male until four or so years old and that's a long time for a group to remain without a male. In the wild another male would either move in quickly or already be present in/around the group and so be already familiar to the females. Infants may be lost in the takeover, but in nature that is the price the group pays for having a new leader. Of course a zoo doesn't want to replicate that behaviour if at all possible, but to avoid that, it has to create another unnatural situation instead- females and babies without a male leader for a long period of time. Dublin Zoo in Ireland very recently lost their male too and are faced with a similar problem at present.
Both Canadian gorilla troops are facing some major changes in the next little while. Calgary is without a silverback with an infant and still a possibility of a second infant. In Toronto there is an elderly silverback and female, its forming a bachelor dyad, and a two year old infant. Decisions will have to be made for both troops in the coming months which could in turn effect Granby's bachelor troops.

Happy and sad news in the same piece of news for you. Female giraffe Marcie has arrived to breed with Nabo however along the way she gave birth to an extremely premature stillborn calf. San Diego had observed the breeding months ago but didn't think it was too likely she was pregnant. There is slight concern over the miscarriage during transport since she did deliver another stillborn while in San Diego. The zoo is hopeful Marcie's next pregnancy will go well in Calgary. Calgary Zoo has a newly designed map on its website and for the first time in years the "island" half of the zoo has been flipped to the top. That makes sense, as the North Parking Lot is at the bottom of the map and that is where most visitors park as it is an enormous slice of land. The very first thing that visitors see after emerging from the long tunnel and ticket booths is the large penguin complex. http://www.calgaryzoo.com/sites/default/files/Zoo_Map_Web(New).pdf

For Calgary zoo goers sad news out of Granby. Gorilla, Nsabi, who was born at the zoo to Kakinga and Donge has died suddenly. He was the only descendant of Donge who was the only one of her line in North America. He was also a strong contender to replace his father as silverback in Calgary. That role may now fall to younger brother Jawara. Youngest brother Zwalani is the nephew of Zuri so that isn't going to work.
