    On July 20th, the institute announced that (0.0.3) Vancouver Island marmots were born.

    On August 2nd, the institute announced that they collected (0.0.26) burrowing owls which are now at the center.

    On July 6th, the institute announced that (0.0.2) whooping cranes hatched on June 1st and June 3rd respectively. They were later named Reed and Harp.

    On August 15th, the zoo announced they acquired (0.3) slender-tailed meerkats named Kwanza, Tali, and Waasi from Zoo de Granby in Quebec which are now on exhibit. The zoo also announced that they transferred (0.4) slender-tailed meerkats to Zoo de Granby.

    On August 16th, the zoo announced they acquired (0.2) greater rheas named Chip and Dip from Parc Safari in Quebec. The zoo also announced they transferred their (1.0) greater rhea named Tatu to an unspecified facility.

    I do, unfortunately. While the SSP is still pushing for the swap, apparently the move is on pause for the indefinite future :(

    Calgary is rather attached to Nabo and is currently aiming to retain him (a new female is set to arrive spring of 2024). Apparently Kiko also has some sort of foot issue, which is making Toronto hesitant to move him (this is what I was told from the Calgary side of things, so not sure how accurate it is).

    This comes from a fairly reputable source, but of course nothing is ever guaranteed. Logistically, moving fully mature adult male giraffes such as Nabo and Kiko is difficult, so I understand the hesitancy, but I still desperately hope this transfer ends up coming through one way or another. It wouldn’t be this year regardless, though :/

    On September 21st, the institute announced that (0.0.19) greater sage grouses named Antlia, Apus, Ara, Carina, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Dorado, Draco, Fornax, Hydra, Lyra, Musca, Norma, Orion, Pegasus, Pyxis, Serpens, and Vela hatched in 2023.

    Whooping crane are still listed in between the moose and North American porcupine near the top of Wild Canada.
