    On May 10th, the zoo announced they started construction on a new behind-the-scenes Savannah Barn as well as sprucing up the Savannah yard. Due to this, their Hartmann's mountain zebras and common ostriches will be transferred to an off-site facility until 2025.

    Kouma the mandrill successfully arrived at Calgary this week from Granby. Kouma is actually related to Layla the female mandrill already at the zoo. The mandrill that died recently named Tumbilli was acctually the father of Kouma. That means that Layla is the aunt of Kouma. Sadly no breeding, just being her companion.

    On May 1st, the institute announced that they released (0.0.2+) burrowing owls into the wild.

    Wilder Institute
    On May 13th, the zoo announced that they will transfer a (0.1) African crested porcupine named Mikumi to another unspecified facility in the near future.

    Also on May 13th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) Turkmenian markhor named Sproing passed away at age 19 due to age-related degenerative issues.

    On May 14th, the zoo announced they will transfer a (0.1) North American river otter named Maybelle to another unspecified facility in the coming weeks.

    Penguin Plunge has reopened, with an upgraded filtration system, lighting and flooring. The one-minute video on the zoo's Facebook link shows images of colourful new signs as well:

    Also on May 18th, the zoo announced they moved (0.0.70) tilapia (species(s) not specified) to the common hippo exhibit in the Destination Africa area.

    On May 22nd, the zoo announced they installed new signage about each individual animal in the African Rainforest Building, Wild Canada, and South America, with Exploration Asia and the rest of the facility to follow.

    These signs are amazing. I find some zoo have these with their large charismatic mammals (i.e. Elephants and Gorillas), but it is so nice to see more of the animals getting that treatment!

    The only downside is that they may get out of date once animals move, but hopefully they are planning to stay on top of it and update it as things change.

    The zo is trying the best to keep the signs up to date. When Freya the cougar passed, they quickly changed the signage. This addition would be cool in Toronto zoo.

    It was confirmed on Toronto Zoo social media today that she has moved to Toronto and is currently undergoing quarantine prior to going on exhibit where she will be introduced to male North American River Otter, RJ.

    On May 7th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) Rocky Mountain goat named Shannon passed away at age 16 due to age-related issues.

    On May 14th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) woodland caribou named Vanilla passed away at age 9 due to age-related issues.

    On June 10th, the zoo announced that Dr. Lanthier will retire on June 30th, with the facility's Board of Directors forming a search committee for his successor. Their COO, Jamie Dorgan, will be the interim CEO during this time.
