The bear thread inspired me to make a thread for the dogs :)

Which species (or subspecies) would you like to see more of/possibly less of?

I can't think of a species as I'd like to see less of since I love all canids. I for one, though, would love to see more of the smaller canids. The jackals, dholes, coyotes, Bush Dogs, Raccoon Dogs. I would also love to see Dingoes and more African Wild Dogs would always be welcome as they're my favorite canid, tied with coyotes.

apart for domestic dogs, the only canids in NZ are two dingoes at Wellington Zoo and a handful of African hunting dogs at about four zoos
    :(

Aint to bad a sit ... I suppose my Kiwi friends? African wild dogs fit with the African theme of several NZ zoological institutions and the ARAZPA species programme. Dingoes, who needs them in NZ ..., besides they might be a native species hazard *** (lol)! ;)

Why do you consider dingoes as being a potential threat to the native wildlife, over any other exotics in NZ? Personally I feel that dingoes are under-rated exhibits outside Aus, yet everybody gets excited when there is talk of NG Singing dogs (exactly the same animal...).

It's the same situation in Australia except we have a lot of dingoes and a handful of fennec foxes (and red foxes if they count.)

Bears, cats, dogs, hoofstock...Australian zoos don't have much of any of them! It's really too bad, but on the other hand the sheer volume of wonderful marsupials, birds and reptiles makes up for any deficiencies.

I like the wierd-looking ones, eg, bush dogs, raccoon dogs, maned wolves...

Are there any small-eared dogs in zoos anywhere? I reckon they'd be cool to see

I was just thinking that about those guys when I made a mental list in my head of obscure/really unusual animals that I'd like to see.

Yes and no; they do differ slightly (think of the vocalisation).

@Chlidonias: You don't have Fennec Foxes in NZ zoos?:(

As in the case of wild canidae, some nice species like Ethiopian Wolf, Short-eared Zorro, Island Grey or Darwin's Fox instantly pop up in my mind. But what I really would like to see is this fine fellow:

Less dreamful: more dhole, AWHD and Cape foxes.

What is that a picture of...It looks like something out of where the wild things roam (which happens to be my favorite childrens book from when I was a kid.)

It's a Tibetan Sand Fox (Vulpes ferrilata). The picture is from the "Great Plains" episode of BBC's Planet Earth series.

Oh wow! They almost look photoshopped; like a coyote mated with a Pallas' cat! I'd totally love to see one :)

I saw a very old one-eyed small-eared dog at the Jardin des Plantes in 1973. I'd be happy to see any of the rare dogs mentioned in this thread (although that Tibetan fox might give me nightmares ). Come to that I'd like to see more jackals.

we don't have anything in NZ zoos! Seriously though, all foxes (including fennecs) are on the completely-banned importation list, along with all snakes, all squirrels, mongooses (except meerkats for some reason) and beavers. So none of those will ever be seen in NZ zoos, apart for rehabilitating sea snakes at Kelly Tarlton's

Yes, New Zealand's authorities sound about as rational as Australia's!

Its funny how, unlike other mongoose species, meerkats are allowed entry because they are cute and endearing. (The "Lion King" has a lot to answer for.)
