Mark Simmons has accused the makers of "Keiko: the untold story" of fabricating pictures of Keiko swimming with wild whales, among other things:

@Vogelcommando: I would say: Yes, just plans. Although adjected to (or even part of) the sea, such exhibits costs a lot of money. Who will finance it? Peta (okay guys, I can hear you laughing).

By the way: According to the graphics, the Sea Pens doesn't seem to be that much bigger then some exhibits at SeaWorld. That's the problem when (paying) visitors want to see animals thru glas tubes and not only salt water...

Never mind these seapens won't be filtered, so all manner of bacteria and sewage (and yes, the drug resistant ones are in the ocean) can come through at any time and stay as long as it wants.

The Associated Press is reporting that Tilikum has died, he was 36.

SeaWorld: Tilikum, orca that killed trainer, has died

I like to think he and Dawn are happy to have each other back. And that its criminal that he's only being remembered for accidentally causing her death.

Information and photos about the Chimelong orcas are starting to pop up. There are nine orcas, captured from the wild in Russia. Five males, four females. They currently live at some kind of "breeding base".

Some additional info here. The facility these 9 are at is simply a holding facility (for them) while their actual exhibit gets constructed at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (named in the article as Yangtze Ocean Kingdom). Their bull is rather large. Supposedly he's currently at 6.5 meters and is not at all fully grown. (Tilikum was 6.9 meters) The oldest is only 13.

A killer whale of a tale: when peer review sometimes fail - Loro Parque Tenerife
    Loro Parque response^

It's worth noting that the people responsible for this "study" are by far the least objective people on this subject. Jett and Ventre themselves made a study previously and made the claim that orcas live substantially shorter lives in that study. To keep things short, their study included stillbirths, miscarriages, and neonate mortality, things that no survey of wild orca lifespans could possibly include. Ingrid Visser also once tried to claim a 3 year old orca was an infant orca who was too depressed to feed. So keeping all these things in mind, this study, and their claims about toothaches, is highly suspicious at its best.

Let's be honest here - LoroParque, like Sea World, is hardly an objective party in this case. I agree that there are perhaps some issues with the original article, but I'd love to see a truly objective study (recognizing, of course, that such a thing is inherently impossible, but I find the assertions of Loro Parque have no more "objectivity" than studies done by noted anti-captivity activists). The problem with much of the research carried out on captive orcas (including, as I most clearly recall, a longevity study cited by many proponents of keeping orcas in captivity) is necessarily carried out by Sea World or parties beholden to Sea World.
