A snowy owl that had been hanging around in downtown Washington, D.C., and getting lots of attention was apparently hit by a bus somehow. She was taken to the National Zoo for treatment and then transferred to a wildlife care center where she will hopefully recover and be released.

Sounds like it fared better than our "celebrity" owl.

So, if you're a birder and you hear the thump, are you allowed to count the bird?

Gosh, I can't believe the celebrity owl(s) didn't have celebrity names! No Owlvis? Owl MacPherson? Owl Capone? Owlmo? What slack journalism.

I take no credit for these incredibly punny names, they came from here: Owls | Owlcatraz

    :D

if you see the bird before the bus hit it then yes. If the bird is still alive after the bus hit it then yes. If it is dead then no. If you only heard the thump then no -- "heard-only" is slack birding which should be stamped out. If you heard the thump but then didn't see the bird until after it was boxed up and at the vet then no. If you see the bird after release once it is better then yes.

Those are the snowy owl hit by bus rules.
