Gracias estmado vogel for this nice article. It does not mention that Xin Xin is the daughter of Tohui and Chia Chia the London Zoo male panda that was loaned to Chapultepec. Our zoo never gavE London zoo any thing in return. Maybe it is time to send them some teporingos.

Large alebrijes (folk art as in the pixar movie Coco) of endangered mexican species have arrived at Chapultepec zoo. They are lovely.
I am particularly fond of the vaquita, lobo, and axolotl alebrijes. What no teporingo alebrije ¡ The article describes well the species represented.

Nace polluelo de cóndor de California en Chapultepec
5th california condor chick to be hatched at Chapultepec zoo is being raised by its parentes, whihc came from San Diego zoo and santa barbara zoo. The prevoius california condors born at chapultepec zoo have been released at the san pedro marir protected area in Baja California, Mexico. This is anexample of binational conservation cooperation at its best and with zoos involved.

The California Condors have bred very well at Chapultepec zoo and some condors born there have been released into the wild at Reserva de la Biosfera San Pedro Mártir in Baja California

De Tohui al pingüino bebé: las crías más #Aww de la CDMX
This articles lists notable births of animals at the Mexico City zoos and aquarium throughout the years. There are various nice videos. The animals included are giant pandas, giraffe, hippo, dromedary, bison, hyenas, Mexican wolves, California condor, gnus and gentoo penguin.

Really cool concept! Will they work in more amphibian breeding programs apart from the axolotls?

Totally agree and thank you for sharing @carlos55!

The idea of an area of the zoo being set aside as an education centre for visitors on the axolotl has been on the cards for more than a decade so I'm really very glad that it is now going to happen after having been a pipe dream for such a long time.

Yes, long overdue but great it is happening an Amphibian Ark conservation center. The plight of axolotl and other freshwater amphibians needs to be highlighted around Mexico City. It would be a good timing to clean up the over polluted lakes they still barely survive in. Mind you local Mexican conservationists are doing incredible work under the most difficult circumstances.

Erika Servin is brilliant at Chapultepec with the conservation of the ambystoma salamanders she has really raised the profile of the species and worked for its ex-situ and in-situ conservation, she really is amazing.

The image of the axolotl now graces the 50 peso bill, is on the side of buses and is very much embraced as an integral (perhaps even totemic?) symbol of the country and its culture and particularly of Mexico City.

In regards to Xochimilco, yes, I agree it desperately need to be cleaned up in terms of pollutants and removal / erradication of the invasive fish species. However, that will take a huge effort that will frankly span decades.

The future of the axolotl in the meantime / immediate future until that larger issue is resolved will sadly not be in the wider lake ecosystem but in the smaller canals and ponds of the chinamperas / campesinos (the traditional farmers).

I do also hope that the same could hopefully happen with the other lakes in Mexico with other endangered and endemic Ambystoma salamanders like those of Patzcuaro, Zacapu, Alchichica etc.

    Well said!

I assume carlos55 will chip in at some point too. He has even more local perspective around goings on with Chapultepec Zoo now.

Yes, and an anthropological / social science perspective which is basically the kind of lens that you need to view conservation through.
