A rare chance to visit the zoo (the theme park is not open) at a reasonable price tomorrow night: Chessington Roar and Explore ..and all proceeds go to charity.
If only Chessington weren't so distant and pricey to reach as such an event is probably the only viable option for a first visit!
Zoo Days in the closed season are inexpensive. There's plenty to see, it's not crowded and details should be on the website.
As I said above, such events are the only viable means of visiting for a zoonerd such as myself who is entirely uninterested in the theme park but as I also said above, Chessington is pretty distant and expensive for me to reach - an off-peak return on the train is £206, and the cheapest advance ticket available within the next three months is £88!
I did understand what you meant about distance and as a non driver am painfully aware of rail fares. The event you mentioned was 6pm until dusk, though, so a zoo day would give you much longer and better value once you were there. That's all I meant.
Unfortunately there has been problems with Kismet one of the male giraffes as he had abit of illness so sadly he passed away
The park's first blesbok has been born, a female. https://www.facebook.com/ukzooguide/posts/957822570906765
Very interesting. Does this female add to the current pair? Or has something happened to Perinet? She was very old...
What species of gazelle is this photographed at Chessington? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=122295971452109&set=pcb.1625550967709686&type=1&theater

According to the Asian Lions in Europe page, Chessington has announced the death of Ashok, the Asian Lion.
Chessington has now also announced the death of the male lion. Article from the Facebook page.... "Hello Adventurers, we are very sad to announce that Ashok, our resident male Asiatic Lion has passed away. Ashok reached a fantastic 18 years old, but due to ongoing health difficulties relating to his age the very difficult decision was taken to humanely euthanize him. He was a true character here at the Resort, and will be very missed by all staff, especially our dedicated Zoo team. Our Lioness, Rani, will of course initially find it strange without her companion but the Zoo team will be providing her with extra enrichment to keep her occupied during this transition."
