Surely if they were going to do it this year they would have to do it soon, or else risk closing two of the zoos major indoor attractions during the winter months when they would be one of the main draws.

The orangs should have moved by now, but there were problems with the construction of the enclosure which could not have been forseen, I believe that the builders have now left the site.

They will be moved into Islands when the gibbons have setted in.

Well given that they will have to close both Monsoon and RORA,when they move the Sumatrans over to Islands and RORA for the Borneans to settle in to their new home, they will have to close two house what ever time of year they do it,in fact far better to do it over winter as there are less visitors, unless of course you want them to do it in spring ot later next year when the zoo is alot busier and alot more people will be upset by them closing the buildings!

It's surely a better plan to move them as soon as possible? The enclosures in question will therefore be shut for the least time piossibe, as it's the quietist time of the year for the general public. lsands would therefore be completely open in time for the new year?

They will move them as soon as the enclosure is finished, last I heard they still had a bit of fine tuning to do before they could move them,as its easier to get these things done before the Orangs move,in far better to have everything right before they move the Orangs in than to try and do work round the Orangs so they can just settle in,instead of getting stressed by builders in a strange place!!

I was going to say they could wait to move the Borneans until the Sumatrans are settled and on show but you're lucky to catch a Bornean on show anyway in bad weather because they understandably don't choose to go out so that's not really a goer!

I just watched this one after watching the 1960 Dudley one. What a difference between the two zoos! All those flowers and lawns everywhere, and animals on grass. It was nice seeing the apes on their islands.

What is the polar bear enclosure now? That's one of the iconic Chester enclosures for me (because of the Zoo Without Bars book). Is that what was turned into the Europe On The Edge aviary? I have a vague recollection of that.

Yes that's the aviary now with spoonbills and co in. It was good to see that piece of film as it reminded me seeing the polar bears as a child maybe around 1980. I do remember one of the bears from that time looking particularly yellow...

Also I remember all the gardens (as in the film) looking much more colourful than they are these days.

    thanks.

I get the impression from the forums that the gardens of Chester are much-reduced from the older days? This bit of film really does make it seem like an actual "zoological gardens".

Correct, now you have to go to Bristol is see such impressive flower displays. I can see why they stopped and gone for less formal but surely they could just have one formal garden somewhere instead of none. :(
